Bermudian Lawyer Dies in Boating Accident

March 30, 2010

Eldridge_GuyThe business and sailing communities are mourning the loss of Bermudian lawyer Guy Eldridge after a fatal boating accident in St Thomas on Friday March 26.

Mr. Eldridge died instantly at around 5pm after breaking his neck in a fall after racing the first day of the Rolex International Regatta in St. Thomas. According to his friend and Managing Partner for the BVI Office Robert Briant, Mr. Eldridge fell on the companionway and hit his head.

Mr Elridge was an accomplished sailor, and a partner with the Conyers Dill & Pearman law firm.

Mr Eldridge graduated from Mount Allison University in Canada with a BA in 1984 and went on to obtain a Law Degree from the University of Kent at Canterbury two years later. He was admitted to English Bar in 1987 and the Bermuda Bar in 1988. He joined Conyers in 1988, and later moved to the British Virgin Islands [BVI] in 1997 and started the BVI office where he became a partner in 2001.

Commodore Dick Schoonover wrote in the Royal BVI Yacht Club’s newsletter:

A freak accident, unrelated to the day’s racing, took Guy from us in a mere trice. Guy was 47, and had served on the Club’s board as Captain of Sailing for several years. Guy gave us imaginative courses to race, new and challenging races, and sailing events for cruisers, and he did it with great humour and wit. Seminars on the Racing Rules of Sailing provided by Guy were always well attended, and included elaborate diagrams for each of his challenging topics. He loved sailing, and loved to share his passion for sailing with others, especially youngsters. Beyond that, he gave the board and the Club his attorney’s good sense and sound reasoning.

Mr. Eldridge, who was 47, is survived by his wife Sue-Ellyn and 14 year old stepson William. His memorial service will be held on April 10 in the BVI.
