Plan to Reduce Gun Importation with Dock X-Ray

March 22, 2010

In an effort to stem the importation of guns into Bermuda, the Government hopes to have installed additional x-ray scanning equipment on the Hamilton docks by the end of this year.

Bermuda was rocked by the shooting of three men this weekend, which resulted in the second murder of the year. Guns, while technically illegal, are reputed to be bought or rented in Bermuda for an amount of around $2,000. The Police state there have been 38 firearm incidents this year, with a total of 92 for all of 2009.

Once fully operational, this specialized equipment will allow for a greater percentage of containers to be examined. The Government anticipates that the equipment will arrive in Bermuda in September 2010 and be fully operational by November 2010.

Chinese company Nutech Ltd has been selected to provide the equipment. The photo below is of the ‘MB Series Relocatable Container/Vehicle Inspection System’ from Nutech, an example of one of the options of container scanners the company offers. You can view their selection here.
