Bermudian BBaller: Defensive Player of Year

April 27, 2010

sullivan phillips Bermudian professional basketball player Sullivan Phillips has been named the ‘Defensive Player of the Year’ by Eurobasket.com.

In addition, Mr. Phillips has been named to the ‘All-Defensive Team’, and received an Honorable Mention for the overall team. The awards are for the Cyprus League 2009/10 season.

The basketballer, who stands 6ft 5″, has the distinction of being Bermuda’s only professional basketball player. He plays professionally for APOEL, a premier team in Cyprus, and formerly played professionally with teams in the Czech Republic, Hungary and England.

Last week, Mr. Sullivan and his team APOEL won Cyprus National Basketball League Championships for the second straight year.

Making this even more impressive, is the fact that 48 hours prior, the Bermudian had been on the team bus when out of control fans from the opposing team deluged the bus, breaking windows and injuring Mr Sullivan. Despite this, he took to the court and played what was reported to be a strong defensive game.

Mr Sullivan isn’t the only Bermudian to play great defense at an international level. Top college player Jenaya Wade-Fray was awarded the ‘Best Defense Award’ from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga [UTC] recently.
