City Hall: Sporting A New Blue Look

April 12, 2010

One of Bermuda’s landmark buildings has shown its support for Autism Awareness Month in Bermuda by “going blue” for the month. With tinted lights gleaming on the building, City Hall’s “new blue look” can be seen every evening for the month of April. The blue look is through an initiative with Bermuda Autism Support & Education [BASE].

City Hall is joined in “turning blue” by some of the world’s most famous buildings such as the Empire State Building in New York City and the CN Tower in Toronto, Canada.

In what could have been a blow to Autism Awareness month, there was a Government error in which they said they would award BASE a $20,000 donation, later announcing that was an error on their part, and the award would go to another autism-related charity.

Less then 48 hours later, one of Bermuda’s exempt companies, Allied World, came to BASE’s aid announcing they would contribute the $20,000 to the charity themselves.

Between the Government grant to autism group “Tomorrows Voices”, and Allied World’s grant to BASE, the autism community in Bermuda received $40,000 in funding this month to help offset the tremendous costs of providing proper care and treatment for autistic persons.

BASE will be hosting events for Autism month including:

  • April 23: Annual Denim Day – Businesses and schools throughout the Island are encouraged to wear denim for a day in aid of BASE.
  • April 30: “Let’s Talk About Autism” – a round table discussion at Mount St. Agnes Academy featuring local and overseas professionals, including Joyce Mounsteven, Geneva Centre for Autism; Dr. Danielle Sutton PhD, Butterfly Effects; Stephanie Martzall, BCBA, Butterfly Effects; and Anthony Peets, Parent & School Counselor.
  • May 17-23: World famous artist and autistic savant Stephen Wiltshire, MBE will visit Bermuda.
