Mark Pettingill: “The Killers are Running the Show”

April 6, 2010

Bermuda Democratic Alliance [BDA] spokesperson on Public Safety Mark Pettingill has strongly spoken on the wave of violence that has gripped Bermuda saying “Right now the killers are running the show! We must avail ourselves of every resource, technology and expert assistance to stop the madness.”

Mr Pettingill, a veteran defense lawyer, referred to the April 2nd daylight murder of Kimwandae Walker who was shot and killed in front of his two children saying “even the worst of organized crime the world over has “rules” about that type of conduct.”

The BDA spokesman joined numerous others in calling for people to assist the police whenever they can.

Mr Pettingill’s full statement follows below:

We are passed a tipping point when young fathers are being killed in broad daylight on a religious holiday in front of their children. Even the worst of organized crime the world over has “rules” about that type of conduct. These killers have gone beyond low life in other jurisdictions.

One hopes people will come forward to report what they know, if they do not they are equally as low and Bermuda is another world for the very worst of reasons.

What else can happen before people do the right thing…drive by shootings at Sports Clubs and a complete disregard for life should be enough…if people even suspect someone they should pass the information on!

Right now the killers are running the show! We must avail ourselves of every resource, technology and expert assistance to stop the madness. The implementation of legislation to address anti social behavior must happen immediately with full support from all political sides.

I am hopeful that the Government and Police have a plan of action waiting to be sprung. This must happen as a matter of obvious urgency. If there is not a “plan” we are in real trouble as a Country.

The Alliance has made various proposals to end gang violence which involves being both proactive and reactive to the criminal elements – anti social behavior orders being one in addition to tagging of offenders. However education and the instilling of family values must also be a priority.”

  1. SB says:

I do agree that we should use all resources availible to catch these criminals, and have preventative measure in place such as instilling values and education..

Killers are running the show but they get caught then what? They will get a QC that the taxpayers pay for, or get lawyers who find a loophole and they get reduced sentences if they even get a sentence. I do not have faith in this country’s justice system.
