Video: Evacuation Of Bermuda Cruise Passenger

May 18, 2010

Scroll down for the rescue video of a US Coast Guard Helicopter hoisting a passenger off the Veendam Cruise Ship en route to Bermuda two days ago.

The Veendam had just departed New York late Sunday afternoon [May 16] en route to Bermuda, when the Coast Guard received a call at 9:15 pm that night from a crewmember aboard the cruise ship Veendam, reporting an 88-year-old female had suffered a head injury after falling down a stairwell.

A rescue helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey arrived on scene. During the video the passenger can be seen strapped into a rescue basket, and being hoisted from the cruise ship deck into the waiting helicopter.

She was then transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, NJ where she was transferred to awaiting medical personnel.

We understand this incident caused The Veendam to bypass its expected St. George’s stop today. This is the third time this year the Veendam has bypassed the Old Towne.

As I said on Facebook, why did it not anchor off the east end. The person was removed from the ship many miles from Bermuda.

What does that have to do with the bypass.

That doesn’t seem clear yet as to why, hopefully we can get more info tomorrow. All we have, info wise, is in the article.

Speculating – perhaps it impacting the timing or something, and the decision was made on that level..?
