Near Drowning: Two Children Rushed To Hospital

June 27, 2010

Bernews understands that two young children have been rushed to King Edward Memorial Hospital following an incident at Ferry Reach literally minutes ago. We understand that the two young children were swimming and ran into difficulty. Bystanders tell us attempts were made to resuscitate the children on the scene, and then they were rushed to hospital.

We unofficially understand that one of the children is doing okay, and the other child is not in a good condition. Police and emergency officials are on the scene right now, and we will update as able.

We join with all of Bermuda in wishing the best for this young child.

Update 1:46pm: A bystander tells us that the kids were swimming before powerboating was due to start. They were pulled from the water, and staff from the St Johns Ambulance Service worked on resuscitating them. We unofficially understand one was resuscitated, and one “they were having trouble with”. St Johns Ambulance rushed them to hospital. In something that will surprise no one, we are told that basically everyone in attendance was visibly upset.

Update 2:35pm: We understand the scenario to be very, very bad for one of the children.

Update 2:52pm: In what is the worst thing we have ever had to report, we are extremely sad to confirm that one child did not made it, and has been pronounced dead.

Update 3:06pm: Official update from the Police:

At 1:30pm on Sunday police received a report of two boys, aged 2 and 3 years old having been pulled from the water at Kindley Field Rd St Georges, near to The BAS kitchen. Attempts were made to resuscitate both children at the scene by an off duty EMT, and then both were rushed to KEMH by St Johns Ambulance where the 3 year old boy died as a result of his injuries and the 2 year old is currently in ICU.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this tragic incident to contact police on 2950011.

Update 10:20pm: The rumour that some of you may be hearing that the second child has died is not true, he is under care at King Edward Memorial Hospital.

Update June 29: The 2yr old has been moved out of ICU into the children’s ward
