This week, the Department of Education wrapped up its inaugural Azorean Portuguese afterschool programme at West Pembroke School. Eleven Primary One and Two students participated in this six-week programme. Taught by Mr. Rui DeSa, with the assistance of Mrs. Torri Correia, the lower primary school students learned common words and phrases such as colours and greetings during their twice-weekly hour-long sessions.

Seth Martin said that he enjoyed the classes because he always wanted to learn Portuguese while Elishe Smith revealed that her favourite phrase was “bom dia” which means “good morning”. Primary Two student, Maya Williams said her favourite part of the afterschool programme was singing in Bermuda’s second language. You can watch a video of the students talking in Portuguese to the Premier, Minister El James and MP Trevor Moniz here.
