Bahamas: Teen Tennis Players Makes 2 Finals

christopher regoBermudian athletes continue to excel abroad, with news coming that teenage tennis player Christopher Rego has advanced to the finals of an international tournament in the Bahamas, after beating a number of players including the number one seed. Christopher plays in the 14 and under age category, and has qualified for the finals in both the singles and doubles.

The tournament, the ITF COTECC Junior Tennis Tournament, features some of the best young tennis players from various nations including the Bahamas, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, UK and the USA.

In the singles Christopher defeated number one seed Manuel Rodriguez from Dominica in his first match up, going on to advance into the semifinals after defeating Verter Hansler from Honduras in a three setter. Chris then claimed another win, defeating Stephan Cooper from Great Britain to make it to the finals.

Christopher has qualified for two seperate finals, as he is also competing in the doubles, pairing with Great Britain’s Stephan Cooper. The pair won their doubles match against O’Neil Mortimer and Julio Valdez of Bahamas to move into the semifinals, where they beat Manuel and Miguel Rodriguez from the Dominican Republic to make it into the finals. The young tennis star will pay in both finals today [July 1].

Christopher is not the only Bermudian doing well in the Bahamas, as young James Finnigan defeated Dylan Walker in the consolation semifinal and then went on to defeat Aston Knowes-Major to win the consolation final.

Update July 3: Christopher won the double final, and finished runner up in the singles.
