Boater Swims Ashore After Fuel Runs Out

July 12, 2010

On Friday evening [July 9] a crew member of the power boat ‘X7’ swam almost 1000 feet to reach shore after his boat ran out of fuel, while the other boater remained on the boat, which had no communication ability.

The ‘swimming boater’ reported to the Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre that the ‘X7′ was “disabled due to fuel starvation” and was located approximately 300 metres [985 feet] north of Flatt’s Inlet” with 1 person remaining on board.

As the ‘X7’ had no communication and was unlit, Bermuda Radio issued an urgency broadcast, however no vessels responded. At 10:54pm that same night, ‘Sea Assist 1’ arrived on scene, supplied fuel but as propeller damage had been sustained, ended up towing ‘X7’ safely to Flatt’s public dock.
