Bermuda Under Tropical Storm Watch

October 29, 2010

Tropical Storm Shary has formed about 400 nautical miles south-southeast of Bermuda. It has maximum sustained winds of 40mph, and is moving northwest at 23mph. At 11:55pm last night [Oct 28] The Bermuda Weather Service placed us under Tropical Watch, and also issued a small craft warning. We are expected to receive 1-3 inches of rainfall today due to the storm.

It is expected to pass within 50 nautical miles to our east late this afternoon [Oct 29] or evening. Strong to tropical storm force winds are expected along with intermittent rain and squally showers. Winds remain strong through Saturday, but high pressure building will allow fair weather to develop.

It is the 18th named storm of the 2010 hurricane season. Forecasters predict it will be short-lived, as Shary is forecast to run into a cold front, and dissipate within the next week or so.

SHARY has just strengthened to 60mph storm heading for direct hit late this afternoon!
(As of 3pm today) It is forecasted to get stronger this afternoon and hurricane hunter aircraft has left to investigate storm and its strength.

Don’t be surprised it hits us as a cat 1 hurricane before we are warned! (as usual)

Bernew, Does anyone know if the causeway will be closed this evening?
What is the top wind speed going to be?
Do we have a minister for that stuff anymore?

    • bernews says:

No notice on the Causeway as of yet….

As of now….top speed is 60mph.

And, well, we are kinda of “Minister-less” until Monday. Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Home Affairs and Housing, Dr. Derrick Binns has been quoted however. Government released a statement this afternoon addressing the storm: http://bernews.com/2010/10/government-update-on-tropical-storm/

        Thanks Bernews,

I’ll keep watching here to see if there is any change.

Now confirmed by officials that the Causeway will close at 7pm – hopefully re-opening at around 11pm or so…
