Dale Butler’s Reaction To Delegates Vote

October 29, 2010

MP and former PLP Leadership candidate Dale Butler has responded to last night’s decision saying “The delegates decision is final and I respect it.”  The energetic ex-educator continued on to say that “There was a whole list of things they did not touch on but what ruffled them indicated the BIG Conversation was a failure: I said surely there is room for a Calvin Smith, John Barritt and Dr. Grant Gibbons to be our special delegates to Washington DC. They did not like that which means the BIG Conversation has failed because the Party is still locked into racism.”

Mr Butler said “I had the best speech by far and history will record that I was the only one to deal with the real issues; Sexual orientation, Drugs, Health care, Unemployables and Taxi drivers.”

Mr Butler, despite being seen as one of the more well liked politicians in Bermuda, only managed to attract 2 votes in the Leadership Challenge held last night. Premier Paula Cox gained 75% of the vote [124 votes], with Terry Lister coming in a distant second with 39 votes.

[Video below: Mr Butler shown arriving at the PLP conference yesterday, along with MP Terry Lister and Minister Glenn Blakeney, with them all exchanging very friendly greetings.]

Seen as a possible candidate for the Deputy Position, Mr Butler did not receive enough nominations from the floor to run.

Those that were nominated for Deputy were Minister Walter Roban, MP Randy Horton, MP Michael Weeks, MP Terry Lister and of course former unionist Derrick Burgess – who was voted in and is our new Deputy Premier.

Your time will come Mr. Butler.

” I said surely there is room for a Calvin Smith, John Barritt and Dr. Grant Gibbons to be our special delegates to Washington DC. They did not like that which means the BIG Conversation has failed because the Party is still locked into racism”

I find it hilarious that the party who constantly throws around accusations of racism at every critic at every opportunity is the organization that has no qualms about displaying and utilizing racist tendencies in every choice they make, including choosing the leader of OUR country, not just the PLP.

    Hilarious hypocrites…and racists

  3. Truth says:

Unfortunately it will not. Not as long as the virtues that that PLP looks for in its leaders are out of step with the remainder of the Country.

    • Tired of nonsense says:

That’s what happens when the leader of a country of over 60,000 is chosen by 0.002% of the population.

  4. Scott says:

nah.. remember, you can “only be racist if you are white” lol

    • LOL says:

All the peolpe accusing others of being haters are usually trying to cover their own hate. I believe that the PLP and the Tea Party people in the US have so much in common but they will never admit it. That why every thing that they do and say makes me………..

      LOL

    • White Jesus says:

Racism is not merely disliking a person for the color of their skin. It is the premeditation and systematic orchestration of political, economical, educational, and cultural subjugation of one race to the political, economical, educational, and cultural advantage of another. It is the anthropomorphisation of the highest power (God) into the image of a particular race with the claim that all other races salvation depend upon the deification of this imagery. When you accept the fact that we have been not only enslaved in person but in mind and taught to worship the blond haired blue eyed ‘white’ man. That we have been taught for centuries that you died for our sins and that we were stripped of our True religion and culture, then you will see that truly…..truly you can only be racist if you are white. How dare you make light of such!!

      • Tired of nonsense says:

So does that mean atheists like myself and family cannot be racist?

        • White Jesus says:

As it relates to racism as merely prejudice the answer is yes. As it relates to the domination and colonisation of asiatic/black races with the image of ‘God’ as a white man with a system of government, education, economics, and culture used to support such a doctrine then the answer is a loud emphatic “NO” !! I think most responders to my comment confuse interpersonal racism racial prejudice) with institutionalized sytematic racism which is the more diabolic form we suffered under white supremacy. Worshipping any human or anthropomorphisation of God (Christ) is institutionalized RACISM! Period!

      • Definition says:

According to the dictionary the definition of racism is :
        1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races
determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that
one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
        2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine;
        discrimination.
        3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races

Therefore you cannot only be racist if you are white.
Disrespect/Hatred/intolerance towards others is manifest in people from all races and backgrounds.

wrt to Religious beliefs, Christian belief purports Jesus to have been Jewish and the iconology of the christian churches are based in the original origins of those churches ie European… Many other countries alter the icons to suit their traditions and cultures such as the south americans. Religious beliefs are entirely personal. Noone can strip you of your beliefs. They may make it difficult or impossible to practice it but they cannot take it from you unless you choose to let it go. Many people are raised in specific religions but choose their own beliefs as the grow and question.

        • White Jesus says:

#1 Do you not know the meaning of the word ‘MERELY’?? I.E. if you want to capture the complete definition of ‘racism’ you must be prepared to look beyond dislike of skin color ONLY.
#2 According to definition #2 which you posted, that makes whites the only ones capable of such racism in our hemisphere since blacks did not ‘do a number two’ on whites I.E. establish a system of government, education, and economy based upon said discrimination. Case closed! Also there is no such thing as “THE” dictionary. There are many dictionarys. And I’m sorry but I don’t privilege oxford or websters with the authority to define racism for me. It cannot be defined semantically and outside of the context of human experience.
#3 The fact that other races would engage in falsehood concerning the true ethnicity or race of Christ Jesus (he was NOT black OR white) only adds to the proof that having man-gods is a racist doctrine and that no race can accept another as their ‘GOD’. So you see it doesn’t remove the problem it just exacerbates it and separates mankind further by giving each race a ‘god’ of their own skin color.
#4 The idea of racial supremecy has it’s roots in the anthropomorphization of God into human form. The form of the most powerful race at the time
          might I add.
#5 My ancestors WERE stripped of their beliefs, they were forbidden to teach it to their children and were raped and seperated from their homeland, religion and culture. The cross and the white false trinitarian man-god Jesus, the anti-christ was shoved down our throats.

      • Tired of nonsense says:

So are you stating that it is completely acceptable for a black person automatically stereotype and dislike another human being simply due to the white pigmentation of their skin?

So in your mind judging one by their skin color rather than their personality traits is a-ok?

      • Get a clue says:

I understand what your saying White Jesus but disagree. I know blacks that really dont like black people just because they ‘act black’. Is this not racist? As a slave knowing that the whites are keeping you in bondage and they gain at your expense, do you truly believe that these slaves weren’t racist. To do that would take a level of understanding and humility that very few in human history have been blessed with. As compared to some inherint attribute, i feel racism is spawned from your upbringing and experiences in life. Example1; i had a white friend which i got on really well with for quite a few year. He was robbed by a black man and after that event our relationship changed. I would here him make comments about blacks (mind you we were hanging around mostly whites), and he would barely acknowledge me for a reason i couldn’t understand.
Example2; Say for instance a white child is born. Every ascpect of their life is done around whites, their only interactions with coloured people is going to public or maybe in school. The parents have no coloured friends and often critizize or make jokes about blacks. Even if they dont have a hatred for blacks the potential for that person to be racist is there. Racism doesn’t have to involve violence its a sense of superiorty that the child will gain when he hears his parents talk about blacks. The same is true for any race in any country

Racisim is possible for all of us black white or blue

        • White Jesus says:

What you are describing here is prejudice and NOT racism per se. As I described RACISM (the full definition), which I identify as the true and most diabolical form of racism is what whites have done to blacks. Whats most important is that when you use the term ‘racism’ for black people you cannot, absolutely cannot use that to pretend that it is the same as what wbhites did to blacks PERIOD! That is my point. Stop pretending that it’s tweedle-dum/tweedle-dee. It is not, and to do so is dissacociation, repression and dishonesty on your part.

          • LOL says:

So you gonna answer if you would be happy in heaven or do you not believe in that? Will only one race of people be allowed into it? Are you a Muslim or Christine? Not that this is my business. Do you know anything about the African/Muslim invasions of Portugal and Spain? Since you want to use the past to justify your feelings today. As I stated before Perspective will be our undoing. According to your logic we such all hate each other till d day. Lighten up Jesus stated he has many sheep in many flocks and ………….

            LOL

          • Rainbow Jesus ... says:

W/J .. you really need to get on board with the ‘Big Conversation’ .
You seem to have soooo much to offer .Share your ‘expertise’ with everyone , you might learn a few things too.
Then when everyone on this rock has heard it all and been fully educated on all things ‘black and white’ , where will we go from there ?
We can get back to uniting this community as it was slowly and naturally doing pre-1998.

(Or , as I suspect , is the ‘Big Conversation’ never ever intended to end , it’s just a weapon for the ignorant ? )

          • White Jesus says:

I’m sure it would be easier for you if you could attack ME instead of the information i’m sharing. That is why I prefer information on my personal religious affiliation to be limited to my abhorrence of the divinity of the human form and the image of a white or black as the image of GOD. And please Mr/Mrs ‘LOL’ what do moslem invasions of portugal and spain (countries) have to do with RACISM and the RELIGIOUS DOCTRINE of Jesus Christ as a white man-god/white son of God and saviour of all Humanity? What does that have to do with the Racist Trinitarian concept of The Highest Power there is…GOD??? Don’t deflect and don’t cow, stick to the topic and defend your position if you subscribe to it. I know many things Jesus said, and “I am GOD” is not one of them. The true Christ is not the divine white savior that the slave masters shoved down our throats and ordered us to worship.

          • White Jesus says:

@ Rainbow Jesus. Hey I’m absolutely fine with Jesus or any prophet being any color whatsoever, I follow all prophets of all races. But the minute you tell me some garbage about he (no matter what race) is GOD, then I have a problem and then everybody has a problem and they are forced to make a “rainbow” Jesus which is a falsehood. It only serves to mythify Christ. He was on the earth and he was not rainbow colored. As long as he’s not GOD/son of GOD (begotten) thats no problem. The question “where do we go from there” is indicative of not understanding where education leads. Knowledge is power and power must be disposed of with truth, fairness tolerance and equality. Thats where we go from education (there). And until we stop worshipping a man-god triune anti-christ doctrine we will go NOWHERE except hell.

      • LOL says:

Said the Racist to funny. My God can take any form he wishes at a thought and he resides in all even thoughs that try to denie the one true God.

        LOL

      • LOL says:

Spoken like a ture racist. Are you that hung up on color if so how could you be happy in heaven were you would undoultablly would still be sharing space with white people or do you believe that only black poeple will make it? Perspective will damn us all.

        LOL

        • White Jesus says:

Does it help you to know that I do not identify myself soley as a ‘black’ man? That i have a white parent, white grandparentS, and ancenstors? That if i was raped by ‘rapist’ men because of their misogynist hatred for women that does not make me a rapist or misogynist for hating the men and the mentality that caused them to do such actions? Would that help you to look at my words again?
You and ‘Get a Clue’ sound like a rapist (or rapist sympathiser) who accuses their victim of the same crime when they address their crime and show repulsion for their mentality.

          • LOL says:

No it does not make your words any better than mine. I just point out the type of thinking that is in your words. I do not know you nor you me but your agguments are still no more valid than mine. If you know the words of Jesus so well please show me the truth. I wager you will not find any justification for hate and that you will only find justification for forgiveness. The question is can you? Do you hate your white lineage, your mother or your father? I so you must hate yourself for they are what made you possible God willing it. I forgive you. In the memory of the Lord’s prayer. I embrase all my brothers and sisters as we share one heavenly Father. The fact that you use his son’s name the way you do in your name is telling.

            LOL

          • LOL says:

            @White
So would you be happy in heaven with white folks? The point to my earlier statement was that no human of any background can claim that they did not mistreat others. The difference is “Perspective” I could harp on about the 100 virgin tribute and call your ansectors rappists and such but why? Please also note that it was 100 per a time period so this happened more than once. If these were your duaghters you would feel just like you do about your people would you not? If people are so cause and effect please note this occured before African Slavery i fact this is what caused the cursades. Hence how the Mors were seen to be evil by the Crusaders. Perspective dangerous indeed if you can not fathom its lessons from a big picture perspective. Please answer the question above even if its to yourself till then LOL some time it has a good effect on the body and mind.

            LOL

  5. The inner membership of the PLP (delegates) value those MP’s who exhibit party LOYALTY more than they do those who recognize the failures of the PLP and who then criticize and push for change.

Those MP’s who did not criticize the PLP (Paula & Derrick)were rewarded last night for their (misguided) loyalty and those who criticized the PLP openly (Lister, Dale, Randy)were not. Paula, as finance minister, recognized and was party to wanton, financial mismanagement (or worse) but she chose to not criticize the PLP or its’ leader publicly and the delegates interpreted this as loyalty and she was ‘appropriately’ rewarded. Derrick was rewarded for the same reason.

All those MP’s who were not ‘loyal’ to the PLP were not rewarded by the delegates. In essence, this blind dedication to party loyalty has put the PLP out of step with what the general public wants. The public want real, substantive change…not blind, misguided loyalty. This blind loyalty by MP’s to the PLP, and not loyalty to doing the right thing, will be the PLP’s downfall.

    • Sean says:

      Agreed Sylvan,
People have to relise that we need our MP’s to put Bermuda before party and not the other way around. NO party is more important than the needs of Bermuda and her people. When it comes to everyone’s best interests and moving Bermuda forward, who are you going to want? Surely not the blind, silent fool.

  6. me says:

racism can be better addressed if it is overt……covert racism is always dismissed by racists (and those that benefit from it) as ‘resonable rules and requirements’ Under covert racism, we saw, voting power linked to property ownership and values, government officials rejecting any license, application, permit, etc. that had the potential of affecting their personal businesses, customer base, and profit margins. We saw less than genuine social reforms, the demise of the Technical Institute, and a Police Service that operated with subtle segregated behind the scenes…..at least racism in Y2K and beyond is easily identified and can’t be defended. It’s still wrong, no matter who the perpetrator is.

  7. Bermudian says:

Another sad day…Mr. Butler is the only one of them who’s heart and mind seems to be in the right place! he has all the needed charachteristics of a good potencial Bermudian leader, somthing we need right now! Apparently the deligates have other priorities….

    • Interesting Facts says:

Totally Agree. Dale Butler cares about Bermuda and Bermudians on a whole. He is out there pounding the pavement working with all in the community to make a difference. Bermuda has a growing level of poverty and he is out on the streets talking to those that live there. He respects the need for a quality education and has committed his time to strive for that. He believes in recreation brings the society together and supports the sporting community as well as the arts. He has pride in the country’s traditions and does all he can to ensure the nest generation knows about them. Being a Bermudian that has known Mr. Butler since I was a small child, I believe his commitment to our great country could have united us. The thing that makes me proud is that he will continue to be out there making a difference, even with out the title – that is because he believes in us, and is pround of our country. HE is a true leader. I hope his voice is allowed to be heard.

      • Tired of nonsense says:

        Agreed.

But he was punished, along with Mr. Lister, for daring to think outside the PLP box and daring to question the almighty Dr. Brown and his band of zealots. They are no different than whites (exc. Zane and Jane of course) in the eyes and “minds” of teh delegates.

If you haven’t noticed that it was the two “rebels” that lost out last night while the “party line toers” were rewarded for such unwavering support for Dr. Brown.

        Coincidences? I think not…

  8. terry says:

Well…. as they say ..if the shoe/s fit wear them. This is just another ploy by the party to keep them in power. Keep what workers and BIU members happy and keep the party faithfull in tow et al.

I mentioned this somewhere else but just can’t remember. ..um so cunfoozed.

In the end, which is just around the reef and the shallow channel, the people will loose but some of these critters will have left the litter box full and there will be no way to extricate the $%^& that is left. But like the advert says ‘You asked for it, BMW’.

I have know Dale for over 40 years. He’s a bridge builder and a mentor. He lays it on the line and is passionate not just for ‘party members’ their children but for all.

Imagine 2 votes. I know the inner feelings of the delagates when they rejected literally his speech and commitment. He did not tow the Party Line of ‘in your face’.

Good for you Dale. You know the party and they know you. Move on and do what you do best…..Representation of the voices that elected you.

Now lets see what the Premier is going to do about the AG’s comments. Lets see what she is going to do about Crime. Lets see what she is going to do about the failing ecconnomy, the debt, the empty hotel rooms, the exit of buiness, the lack of support for government outside Alaska Hall.

To bad we can’t say the “Butler” did it.

    The irony is…he already has.

  9. Confused... says:

Obviously none of you people were there last night. People were more than willing to hear what Butler had to say. Unfortunately, however, by 30 seconds into his “speech” which was an absolute EMBARASSMENT to his own intellect as he slapped a captain’s hat that read “Team Bermuda” atop his head and saluted the delegates, put emphasis in ALL the wrong places and YELLED his speech at the top of his lungs, people had all but checked out. The unfortunate thing is that he might’ve had great ideas but nobody was willing to hear them over the ridiculous ranting and oddities that consumed the entire presentation.

  10. vexed says:

It is rather hilarious that a political party with the word ‘Progressive’ in its name is so fearful of a leader that will actually create real progress for this island, which in terms of said progression, is currently stuck in a deep rut. Thank you for attempting to address the real and significant problems Mr. Butler, instead of simply providing blank statements promising improvement.

  11. terry says:

And there in lies the rub ‘confused’…………just like when your mom or dad scream at the top of their lungs because they had to tell you a hundred times don’t do it, yet you did.

Seeks councelling confused. The Dr. is out of office.

    • Confused... says:

Oops…the Doctor may be out (thank goodness) but so is the Butler. Maybe his mom and dad should’ve advised him better…you know, on the yelling stuff.
