Hockey League Weekend Round Up

October 20, 2010

Match scores and roundups of this past weekend’s Bermuda Hockey League matches follows below:

Swifts B 4 Canaries B 0
Canaries suffered a cold splash when the Swifts scored 3 field goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. The team reorganized and played a stronger second first half, though we suffered another hit from the Swifts in the 22nd minute. The second half we were a different team and with a much stronger defense we helped our goalie Janet Goslett to keep the team strong. Even though the opponents got several short corners the Swifts couldn’t penetrate our defense.

Budgies A 1 Swifts A 2
The Budgies field hockey team again started this game against the Swifts A at the national sports stadium short of players. They had 10 people on the pitch including two new players to hockey, Sheree Hendrickson in Forward and Candace DeSilva in Goal.

The game started fair and even where both teams were pushing using their wings to move the ball forward. The Budgies let the first goal in by a tight angled shot by Alex Francis of the Swifts A in the first half. This followed a series of great saves by the new goal keeper for the Budgies, Candace.

After this, the Budgies defense pushed the ball forward working with Lakae Dill, Keishae Robinson, and Stephanie Adderey in midfield using the width of the pitch to keep the ball going forward. The Budgies struggled to keep the ball moving as the Swifts were keen on attacking and continued to pressure all of the time. However the Budgies were able to return the score to a tie with a goal by Lakae Dill.

Towards the end of the game, the Budgies let their guard down as the shortage of players made them struggle with marking in defense. The Swifts scored another goal making the score 2-1 which ended the game.
Overall it was a good game and both sides attacked and showed pressure. The Budgies struggled with keeping up as a lack of players created opportunities for the Swifts to use their numbers and speed to move the ball into the Budgies’ defense.

Bluebirds B 3 Ravens B 0
Bluebirds opened the scoring with a field goal from Deborah Sagurs who has made an excellent start to the season with goals in each of Bluebirds games. Then Sarah Smith scored a great solo goal which took the score to 2-0. Vicki Johnston made a dive to save a shot from a penalty corner from Tracey Stewart to keep a clean sheet. Then Deborah Sagurs scored her second goal and Bluebirds third after a pass from Lisa Fontanetta near the top of the circle. Bluebirds defense played very well in this game to help Vicki Johnston keep the clean sheet. Ravens B knew that this was going to be a tough game but despite the pressure, Ravens had their chances but couldn’t capitalise. Jen Adderley had a fantastic game in defense despite the team losing 3-0.

Ravens A 7 Swallows A 2
The first 10 minutes saw the 2 teams battling it out in midfield before Ravens settled and linked up well creating several attacking plays. Ravens were awarded their first penalty corner in the 15th minute which Alex Wheatley converted and 2 minutes later, another corner was given and converted again by Alex. The next goal came late in the second half by one of our junior players Katie Masters who tipped a shot going wide by a fellow Raven into the goal. The Ravens came out in the 2nd half and scored again in the 39th minute when a long hit entered the circle and was popped by up Swallows keeper into the path of Katie Masters who put her stick on the ball and into the goal to score her 2nd. Emma Simmons put her name on the score sheet in the 45th minute with a reverse shot from the left hand side. The play evened out between the 2 sides but Megan Leitch was able to put another goal past the Swallows in the 56th minute. Ravens defense played solid and goalkeeper Juliette Oatley made some fine saves but Swallows did manage to score 2 goals in the 59th and 68th minutes thanks to Joanna Heaney and Liz Stewart. With 2 minutes remaining in the game Megan Leitch scored another field goal to complete the scoring.

Cardinals B 2 Swallows B 1
The game was a slow start for Cardinals who struggled to settle in to the first half. The Swallows scored the first goal of the game to take the lead 1-0. Cardinals were able to capitalize on a short corner and tie the first half of the game 1-1 with a goal by Adrien Smith . The second half was a stronger performance by Cardinals who controlled much of the play. After multiple shots on goal, Cardinals took the lead as Caroline Gledhill deflected in a shot on goal by Helen Marshall on another short corner. The game finished 2-1 to Cardinals.

The only other match to take place this past weekend was a men’s match between Rebels and Panthers. The score finished Rebels 4 Panthers 3.
