These bus drivers drive way too fast especially when they are late on their schedule and run red lights through the city. I hope the man is ok and sues the PTB as well as the driver who was operating the bus! That corner is especially bad when they come tearing around it. I have nearly been knocked down by one driver and complained to Dan Simmons about it before at PTB!!! I have the emails to back this up. Slow down bus drivers…you drive WAY TOO FAST and you have passengers who are yours to take into consideration as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Marlo says:

I totally agree – I have been on way too many buses with drivers who scare me because they are driving like maniacs and the older ones are worse!! They do not take their passengers into consideration at all – Drivers Please! – just take your time you have other people’s lives in your hands!

    • Never jump the gun! says:

So you were there this morning and witnessed the accident right? If not, you should clarify your comments and put them in the correct context rather than pre-determine what transpired. Whether or not bus drivers drive to fast may have a lot do with this or absolutely nothing at all!

  2. Bermudian. says:

    @Truth is killin’ me:

Before you comment, you should know the details. Nobody said the bus was speeding, but people automatically assume that when a bus is involved in an accident, it is automatically THE BUS DRIVERS fault, when half of the time, its the other partys fault. Bermudians are so quick to judge and criticize without knowing the full story.

I am not defending the bus driver saying it was not their fault, nor am I defending the man involved in the accident, before we know ANYTHING, we ought to find out full details before just pointing the finger. This is a prime example of why Bermuda is the way it is–people are always so quick to jump to conclusion and criticize instead of minding ones own business.

    • Truth is killin' me says:

@ Bermudian…You must be a bus driver…I’m going by facts in my instance…STFU…you’re a fence sitter…I’m not defending this or that BLAH,BLAH,BLAH!!!

      • Bermudian. says:

FYI-I’m NOT a bus driver, simply stating my OPINION-”fence sitter”? Grow up. Unlike you I’m not blaming any of the partys for the accident.

      • Curious says:

He couldn’t of been jaywalking, because that never happens here…

        • Ray says:

Curious… You need to open your eyes. Either you don’t know what jaywalking is or you don’t go outside. People jaywalk here

    • Ray says:

First off Bermudians are not the only ones that judge. Everybody in the world judges a situation before they know all the details. How the heck you gonna call your self Bermudian and then talk down on your own people?

  3. Jays says:

I’ve also noticed that if you wait for them to pull out of a bus stop, they take forever to pull out, but if you drive by them they try to drive right into your vehicle to get out! lose-lose situation when it comes to that. They also think they have right-of-way coming off stowe hill. I was almost hit by one that was coming off that hill.. Sue ‘em!

    • TT says:

      this is so tru!!

    • Shopper says:

I WAS hit BY A BUS last month, knocked off my bike (I wasn’t even moving!!), and wrote a complaint in to PTB. No one dignified it with so much as a response. So whilst I wasn’t there, my money’s on it being the driver’s fault. These folks really need to re-learn the rules of the road. About the only positive thing I can say is that they do actually use their indicators.

  4. White Jesus says:

I know a lot of ppl are not going to understand or appreciate this comment, but hearing that the children were screaming in fright is actually a great relief to me. With so much violence and bloodshed being propagated on television et al, I imagined that they might not be as sensitive to such an occurence. This proves me worng. While I am so sorry for the accident victim, i am so happy to be proven wrong. There is hope for humanity! We haven’t lost the war yet!

    • Ray says:

So your basically saying that your happy that those children on the bus got the sh** scared out of them. Great, more psychopaths in this world.

      • White Jesus says:

I admit, it can be difficult to understand what I am saying. Think of it this way Ray, it’s the difference between a baby born crying and a baby born not making a sound. Which one is more saddening? No, I am not happy that they got the shit scared out of them primarily. Paradoxically, I am happy to know that incidents like this still scare the shit out of children. I.E. they are not numb.

    • common says:

violence and bloodshed being on tv does not make people insensitive ITS A COP OUT AND AN EXCUSE SOCIETY HAS USED FOR YEARS INSTEAD OF WANTING TO DO ANY REAL WORK.
WHAT IS YOUR REFERENCE FOR THIS? THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE HEARD OVER THE YEARS AND JUST COME TO ACCEPT,

  5. It's easy says:

Its about time PTB installed tacographs in the cabs (if they don’t have them already). They have had them for years in Europe.
The machine never lies and the speed is recorded for all to see.
I agree the buses do speed particularly middle road Warwick. If the timetable is wrong then sort it out.

  6. White Jesus says:

Is there really this many morons as there appears to be on this island? Does someone have access to information that the rest of us don’t? How the hell do you ppl know that it was the bus driver’s fault? This shows me that there is definitely a band of people who have no respect for the course of law. That’s why Bermuda is falling as a civilization. We are 400 years old…ACT YOUR AGE BERMUDA!!!!

    • Bermudian. says:

I totally agree with you. People are always so quick to point fingers.

  7. terry says:

@ White Jesus, there is a differance between “civilization” and ‘colonization’. And for the record, it was the bus drivers fault. If they had not been driving at this time, at this place, the injured party would have had escaped such a incident. Ban the damn buses.

Yeah…I walk through the valley of Victoria and fear no evil buses……detz vat yoo said rite?

  8. Think About it says:

If it was not the drivers fault then whose was it? A PEDESTRIAN ALWAYS has the right of way and drivers approaching crossings should exercise due care. Furthermore there was a lady WALKING (that’s what the eyewitness said) in front of him, so its not like he ran out in front of the bus whether the walk signal was on or not. Hitting a pedestrian on or near a crosswalk is not an easy accident.. the driver has to actually be NOT  paying attention. Some bus drivers are just not good drivers (Not all but quite a few) many are rude and not cut out for a customer facing position. The worst CROSSWALK in town is the one right in front of the bus depot where they exit the depot on to Church St. I have come across that pedestrian many a times and had to jump back on the side walk because the buses do not stop for pedestrians there… there is a sign there for pedestrians… but it does not say YEILD for buses or anything like that.. SLOW DOWN DRIVERS- BUS DRIVERS YOU HAVE A PUBLIC DUTY TO DRIVE SAFELY

    • White Jesus says:

Pedestrians have the right of way! Thanks for that wonderful news. I’ll remember that next time I want to take a jog down east broadway in the middle of de street at rush hour. I DARE em to hit me!

      • Think About it says:

WHEN CROSSING A STREET… Now take your head out of your a** Obviously a pedestrian has to take precausions but drivers who are operating a vehicle should be especially cautious! YOU CANNOT JUST HIT A FRIGGING PERSON BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY- that would be considered Driving Without Due Care punishable under the Road Traffic Act 1947… Dont argue with me… Find a law that covers drivers who hit pedestrians. Whether that man was on a crosswalk or not DOES NOT MATTER in a court of law.

I agree that pedestrians have equal responsibility to take precausions.. and should this have happened outside of town maybe I would have had a different view.. however Hamilton is extremely busy with pedestrians and drivers and with all that there is no way you should be driving so fast that you can’t stop in time or just plain not paying attention.

Just a quick question for those who think that pedestrians do not have the right of way: Morning runners on Harbour Road- They are not on a crosswalk or sidewalk are you telling me that if a driver hits them they are not responsible for that?

        • Think About it says:

          precautions*

        • Think About it says:

Better yet when is a pedestrian responsible for getting hit by a car.. besides throwing themselves in front of one.

        • White Jesus says:

Take your a#s out of your head!

  9. Frank says:

I think we have all seen the way the buses go in and out of that place and how they drive on the road. Enough said. They need to get it together either way.

  10. terry says:

Some people just need to think about it bwahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…amazing…………..

It’s dee Police fault….dey should haiv bean der….

  11. Road Sense says:

    Everyone:

    Just a point to assist:

    1. Pedestrians do not have the right of way just because they are pedestrians – - this is a falsehood or myth in driving. The pedestrian as well as the driver have equal responsibility when it comes to crossing a road/street at any junction. In Bermuda, we have this belief that pedestrians can walk wherever and whenever they choose – - that is untrue.

    • Interesting Facts says:

Although this was not a zebra crossing – it is ILLEGAL NOT to stop for a pedestrian at a zebra crossing.

At lights however the green light has the right of way.

      • Jays says:

Pretty sure it’s illegal to kill someone from hitting them with your vehicle. In this type of situation, manslaughter, BUT you can’t go “hey the light was green so I ran the guy over, I had right of way!”

  12. Rider says:

What is going on with you all. You all (most of you) sound like a bunch of uninformed idiots opening your mouths (typing) without considering all the facts.
    Note:
-Bermudians have a very bad habit of jaywalking.
-There is no such thing in Bermuda that pedestrians have right of way unless they’re on the crosswalk.
-The passengers have already said the driver was not speeding.
-Not all bus drivers are bad drivers.

Let the police do their investigation. I’m sure all parties involved, including the bus passengers were traumatized by the accident. Then only chastise those who are at fault.

    • Jays says:

From the picture and the fact I drove past this, this morning, it looked like he was on a cross walk. Or extremely lazy and crossed 3 feet away from it. Correct me if I’m wrong.

  13. terry says:

Yoh!!! Road……..True to a degree. But since we don’t have the complete report, if it was at a “crosswalk” the bus driver is……

I am sure the Police will sort it out. Simple deduction on my part.

  14. wow101 says:

some of you are blind or jus somewhat ignorant. if you look at where this picture is taken how can speed even be in consideration. Thats the back end of the bus terminal meaning that bus just turned on that street so how could they have been speeding. its a bus where speed and turning equals flipping. second the bus was turning and since they cant turn on a red light that means it most likely was green then the pedestrian crossing would be on stop so there is no way a bus and a person should be in the road at the same time in Hamilton.

    • Hmmm.... says:

I work in this area – and use these lights multiple times a day. Even when standing on the sidewalk pedestrians have to move to avoid speeding buses coming around that corner to make time.

I am not saying that this driver was speeding – i don’t know – BUT that corner is dangerous in general for pedestrians especially with large vehicles looking to “make the light”.

    • huh says:

wow101….R U SERIOUS?? Why can’t a bus turn on a red light? Because it’s the law? CLEARLY some people in bermuda have no regard for the law and there’s no doubt in my mind that this bus was speeding to make the light. I also work in the area and EVERY SINGLE DAY I witness buses, cars, trucks, bikes, you name it, speeding through these lights. It doesn’t matter which direction they are coming from…someone is always trying to beat the light.
So looking at the picture, my take is that the bus driver decided to run the light and the man decided at the same time he was going to cross the street (not at the cross walk) and there you have it. Had the bus driver been taking his time, this could have been avoided. I highly dought this 67-year old man jumped out in the road at the last minute and the “speed-abiding” bus driver just couldn’t possibly stop in time to avoid hitting this man.
It sounds to me that YOU may be a bit blind or just somewhat ignorant to think “there is no way a bus and a person should be in the road at the same time in Hamilton.”

  15. on the bus says:

I was sitting on the bus facing the window when this happened. Are people so devoid of common sence and compassion that they r so quick to form TOTALLY WRONG ASSumtions.

The bus was NOT SPEEDING and the man was NO-WHERE NEAR the crosswalk. I think that instead of harping on the negative bus driver’s driving skills we shold be having compassion for the bus driver. She though she had likely killed someone. How would feel if that were you?

Stop complaining and GET A LIFE People!!

  16. Tricia says:

I know that corner well. You have to cross over to get to The Athletic Club and it’s blind corner ’cause you don’t see traffic coming until you’re already half way over the pedestrian crossing. Buses come screaming around that corner all the time. I’m sorry this happened, but maybe the city counsel was now look at implementing some kind of safety measure before someone gets killed there. Buses do not slow down enough to see if anyone is about to step onto the pedestrian crossing heading towards City Hall.

  17. joe says:

People, look at how narrow the roads are in BDA. It does not take much for a bus driver who may not be very alert to hit someone or someone(especially now days) not paying attention and step off the curb and BAM! There may be plenty of blame to go around.

  18. joe says:

Oops, forgot to put after (especially now days) walking and texting and not paying attention. I do not, however that the 67 year old was texting.

  19. Uncle Ruckus says:

All this arguing but the bottom line is bus drivers a good 90% speed to make time on their schedules. I’ve heard bosses telling the drivers off over their radios for being late etc. They DO speed down that road/hill and swing around the corner heading to the terminal trying to beat the light. Put up a camera for a day and see. Getting on a bus in 2010 is scary. Swinging all around with those psychos driving like it’s Nascar. They don’t wait until you are seated before they speed off, they pull out in front of people. Ridiculous.
