NYT Lists Bermuda as Top Scuba Diving Area

1024747_scuba diverAlthough the New York Times concedes Bermuda technically isn’t a Caribbean destination, the newspaper has nevertheless listed the island as one of the top half-dozen scuba diving sites in the region.

Along with such West Indian diving meccas as the Dominican Republic and St. Martin, Bermuda offers one of the best locations for Americans in search of an adventure holiday beneath the waves says the paper’s travel correspondent Allison Busaca.

“OK, so Bermuda is not technically within the Caribbean Sea, but it is part of Caricom, the political alliance of Caribbean nations,” she reports. “And with more than 300 shipwrecks and one of the healthiest coral reef systems in the world, the island is ripe with diving opportunities”.

She highlighted a night-diving excursion run by Triangle Diving, which operates out of the Grotto Bay Hotel, for those vacationers looking to test “their strength, stamina and stomach”.

“Going down at night, you get to see different kinds of creatures,” Triangle manager Graham Christmas told her. “The parrotfish will be asleep; crabs and eels and octopus will be more active. It’s very spooky.”
