British Airways Flights Remain Grounded

December 2, 2010

1British-Airways-flightsBritish Airways regularly scheduled Bermuda flight remained grounded for a third day today [December 2] as heavy snows kept London’s Gatwick Airport closed.

As a result of Gatwick’s ongoing closure, an empty jet  BA dispatched to the island’s L.F. Wade International Airport on Wednesday so UK-bound passengers could reach London despite the cancellation of yesterday’s incoming flight was unable to take off.

BA issued this advisory to travellers in the UK this morning: “Gatwick will remain closed today, do not travel to the airport. If you are travelling tomorrow check your flight is operating before leaving for the airport.” Runways at Gatwick Airport closed at 10:30pm on Tuesday after as much as six inches of snow  fell. More than 600 flights have been cancelled and thousands of travellers are reported to be stranded at the airport. “There’s no way any aircraft will take off or land in the current conditions, as safety is paramount,” a Gatwick spokesman has said.

I’ve been grounded in Bermuda before…but ONLY because I didn’t want to go home!! :) If you have to be grounded ANYWHERE…Bermuda is the place for it to happen!!

Oh well….weather is weather. Can’t change it. This has been one unusual storm. places like Gatwick rarely need very expensive snow removal equipment so they don’t have much. Airports like Denver or Chicago would be laughing at such a ‘little to them’ storm.

I’ve seen snow equipment at work in Denver. Amazing!

I’d much prefer to be in a hotel room, at my expense, than splattered off the end of a runway because safety was compromised.

No better place to be grounded then Bermuda. Enjoy your stay, make the best out of it.
