Coast Guard to Medevac Injured Man

coast guard helicopterAccording to a US Coast Guard statement issued this evening (Dec 31), they are “preparing to rescue the injured 2nd mate of the Greek flagged merchant vessel Aegean Angel approximately 500 miles northeast of Bermuda.”

The man was injured yesterday when a wave crashed on the deck, an incident which also killed two other crewmembers.

The Bermuda Police said “It appears the Captain, Chief Engineer, Chief Officer went on the deck, to examine the vessel after recent bad weather (storm) that was believe to have affected the Ship. All three men were violently thrown about the vessel resulting in the Captain and Chief Engineer being killed and the Chief officer suffering severe head injuries.”

The Coast Guard said they were contacted this morning by the Minister of Citizen Protection in Greece, who was requesting assistance in the rescue of the injured man – a Greek national. A Coast Guard rescue helicopter crew and a C-130 airplane crew were scheduled to fly to Bermuda today before attempting the medevac Sunday, said officials.
