Mamie: A Driving Force In Tourism

December 6, 2010

1taxi_signwiki“Let’s take a boat to Bermuda,” went the lyrics of an old Frank Sinatra song — and the Chairman of the Board could have added, once we’re there let’s get a taxi to see the island. Especially the one driven by Mamie Morrissey.

In a travel article by Isabelle Esteves about her recent cruise to Bermuda, the Yahoo News contributor says Bermudian Ms Morrissey was an informative, courteous and entertaining guide who ferried her around the island on a personalised five-hour tour.

“There are many ways to visit the sites of Bermuda from the Naval Dockyard. We walked off of the ‘Explorer of the Seas’ not quite sure what we were going to do,” says Ms Esteves. “We were considering taking a taxi tour to St George’s. Just as we were looking the taxis over trying to decide which one to choose, up drives Mamie in her shiny van and the rest as they say is history. We decided we liked her after a couple of words and the rest, as they say, was history …

Ms Morrison provided the American travel writer with a running commentary about Bermuda, its history and its natural and man-made attractions  (“It is wonderful to get to enjoy the beauty of the island, not just to see what every other tourist sees,” she said).

“Our tour was a great day that we really enjoyed,” said Ms Esteves. “The price was well worth it and the whole tour was fitted to our schedule and what we wanted to do. There are many private taxi drivers who wait for passengers to get off of the cruise ships. If you can’t find Mamie Morrissey you can try one of the other drivers.”
