BELCO Forum on Plant Development Plan

January 18, 2011

Today [Jan 18] BELCO announced that it will hold a public forum next week, providing the community with the opportunity to view a presentation and participate in a discussion of BELCO’s “New Energy Equation” for Bermuda. The forum will take place Tuesday, 25 January, 6:30-8:00 PM, at Bermuda College in the North Hall Lecture Theatre.

On 30 December 2010, BELCO filed an application with the Planning Department for the phased development of its Central Power Plant in Pembroke.

BELCO has filed the application now because it must retire some old plant and install new generation equipment by 2013, in order to continue reliably delivering power to homes and businesses. To meet that deadline, BELCO must issue a Request for Proposal and sign contracts for new equipment in 2011.

The 2010 Central Plant development plan differs considerably from the 2007 plan. Over the past three years, BELCO has revised the plan, taking into account objections that were raised in 2007, as well as taking into account changing technology, energy efficiency and renewable energy, along with revised projections about Bermuda’s future energy requirements. BELCO will continue to review its energy plan every three years, while working toward an energy mix that includes distributed generation and generating 20 percent of the Island’s power from renewable resources by 2020.
