Look Out Below — It’s St. George’s

January 9, 2011

1-bermuda-MSNBCThe approach to Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport has been selected as one of the most scenic in the world by those who know what views look best from above — airline flight crews.

In a survey of pilots and flight attendants conducted for MSNBC’s Destination Travel, Bermuda ranked alongside St. Maarten, Aruba, Aspen, London, Queenstown, New Zealand and a number of other vacation spots as offering one of the most breathtaking landing approaches in the world.

Former Air Canada flight attendant Heather Zorzini said her all-time favourite place to land was  Bermuda — “for the sheer charm of the isolated, unexpected oasis in the Atlantic Ocean.”

“The island is just as lovely from the air as it is on the ground,” Ms Zorzini said. “Deep-green seas fade to pale turquoise as they lap at pink beaches, and pastel houses with white limestone roofs come into focus on the surrounding lush hillsides.

“It all creates an achingly picturesque vista.”

It is a pretty ride in alright. Years ago, when fuel was cheaper, airfares were higher & airlines were not watching where every penny went, pilots could often be heard on the radio as they approached requesting permission to do the ‘Island tour’.

The Island tour wss a slightly longer approach diverting along the S Shore low & slow so that those, on one side anyway, got a good look at the Island. The departure was sometimes the same. A low crossing of the Island then speed up & up you go.

    Many will remember those days.

    Nice write up for Bermuda.
I hope there was a better more up to date picture used?

Def a nice bit of free PR for us…that is the exact picture used, we got it from the article itself.

Great picture. Probabley from a Helicopter at or about 500-600′….(just a little avaiation here).

No way a commercial plane is on final from this angel. Runways 012 and 300 are at almost right angels.

Then again, it could have been one of the BA flights…never know.

Deltas flight 007 cleared for takeoff runway 12, passing 1000′ turn left heading 350 direct Targa……or if you wish turn right, cross the island at or above 2500′ resume on navigation……… ………….BA1087…..no you cannot land on Water Street…….Pub On The Square is closed………………………………………………………………..

As the expression goes. Bye, you are one sick child!

Just depends on who you associate with Tryhangel……….If I am sick better re-read your prescription.

Now stick to the subject and stop the personal attacks.

The personal attacks will stop ONLY when you stop your nonsense.

I agree, BDA is a beautiful place to land, the passengers always have their faces glued to the windows. However unless there is a mechanical and we are stuck overnight, Bermuda is a high priced destination that the majority of my flight attendant friends can not afford. We all head down to the Dominican Republic or Jamaica. Sorry Bermuda, you’re just not a working class destination.

  7. Terry says:

Call as it is……..you wouldn’t know a laugh if it bit you on your lips.

As for personal attacks, I use that as bait and I don’t have to ‘drag a lure’.

I quite enjoy my lunnacy. At least I’m not held hostage with the emotional baggage and frustrations that have a strangle hold on most Bermudians whether on iland or not.

As for my previous ramble, it’s all factual.

    A blessed day to all.
