Magistrates Court: Very Expensive Bar Bill

January 25, 2011

bar_liquorIn Magistrates Court yesterday morning [Jan 24], forty-two year old John Edwards pleaded guilty to a charge of deception and was fined $1,000.

Ms Cindy Clarke outlined the evidence saying that in August 2010, Mr Edwards had obtained goods from the Swizzle Inn to the value of $160 and had not paid for these goods.

The evidence was that after a few hours drinking, Mr Edwards had been asked to pay his $160 bar bill and had not done so.

Explaining, Mr Edwards agreed that he and a few friends had been drinking at the Swizzle Inn in August. Around five o’clock, when he was asked to pay, he found that he did not have the wherewithal to pay then and there. He further explained that he asked the Manager if he could go home and get his credit cards. He said that to prove his good intentions, he gave the Manager his name, address, telephone numbers, and also a business card.

The manager was said to have called the telephone numbers around 6:30 pm that same day and found that all the numbers were inactive. Mr Edwards explained that the telephone numbers were out-of-date as he had used an old business card.

Mr Edwards was arrested and charged in September 2010, resulting in his being given a Court appearance for a trial that was scheduled for December 2010. Mr Edwards did not appear on that day, and was picked up on a bench warrant on Friday 21st January 2011.

When asked if he had paid the $160 bar bill, Mr Edwards admitted that he still had not.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $1,000 with one month to pay, but also ordered that $160 in reparations should be paid into the Court by Friday 28th January 2011.
