Chewstick Wants You To Engage In Kombat

February 25, 2011

1KombatBermudians should engage in Kombat — and heed the performer’s conscious message that music can be a positive outlet for young males.

Talented Bermudian urban emcee Kombat will kick off the the Chewstick Foundation’s new series of Griot Sessions tonight [Feb. 25] at its brand new Court Street venue across the street from Spinning Wheel.

Kombat’s “Hope for the Hood” is an interview-style performance which follows a young man on his journey to reacquaint himself with his violence-plagued “home” after leaving Bermuda to study at Clark Atlanta University, a member of HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities).

Equipped with book and street knowledge, Kombat will share how music has kept him on the straight and narrow, his unique vision and “hope for the hood” through his lyrical stylings and unconventional delivery.

Some of his songs include “Codfish & Potatoes”, “Mother Earth”, “What’s Really Going On” and “Success”.

To enhance the vibe, vocalist Candace Furbert — the 2007 Bermuda Idol — will be the opening act. She will be performing the popular song “Vice Versa Love” by Barrington Levy and two original songs, including “So Gone”, listed on Shane Woodley’s latest project “Da Squad”.

Kombat is an emerging force on Bermuda’s entertainment scene, having come through Chewstick numerous times to drop his conscious words and share his talent.

He is also featured on the new compilation CD, “Da Squad – Starting Eleven” and will provide a sneak peek of new material from his mixtape “Hope for the Hood”.

“Do not miss the opportunity to experience an amazing performance and the first Griot Session at the new Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge & Cafe,” said a Chewstick spokesman. “It is guaranteed to be an energising and uplifting event. Enjoy the positive vibes, celebrate live music at its best, and experience the first ever Griot Session in the new spot!”

All performances are streamed live on the Chewstick website and stored in the Chewstick archives. Tickets are $20 with part proceeds in aid of The Chewstick Foundation. Advance payment can be made at Chewstick Headquarters between 9am and 5 pm, Monday to Friday. Showtime is 8 pm and seating is limited.
