Hamilton Parking Rate Hike Next Week

February 28, 2011

The City of Hamilton today [Feb. 28] announced new rates for both on street parking and parking lots, and also said that parking voucher booklets will be phased out, and Easy Park electronic meters will become mandatory in the City of Hamilton.

Effective next week Monday [Mar.7], on street parking will be $2.00 an hour [$0.25 increase], car parks will increase by $0.50 per hour and the all day parking lots will increase by $2 per day.

Chief Operations Officer and Secretary for the City of Hamilton, Mr. Ed Benevides said, “At the end of last year we announced rate changes for trucks and vans. We also indicated that the parking rates for cars would also increase at the beginning of this year. Rates in all City parking lots and on the street are affected. On the street parking will now be $2.00 an hour –a $0.25 increase. Car parks will increase by $0.50 per hour and the all day parking lots will increase by $2 per day. All increases will be in effect from Monday, March 7.”

Mr. Benevides added, “We encourage the general public to purchase the Easy Pay parking meters. Once the current supply of parking voucher booklets is depleted we will not order new stock. This means the use of the Easy Park electronic meters will become mandatory in the City of Hamilton. The meters can be purchased and topped up at City Hall and other locations around the island. The staff at City Hall will be happy to show Easy Pay purchasers how to use the devise, additionally, further instructions can be found at www.easypay.bm”

“The City will continue to supply monthly and quarterly parking permits which can be used in the car parks. Information about the specific cost in each of the car parks can be found in the newspapers and on our website at www.cityhall.bm. Residential and handicapped parking permits are not affected by the rate increase.” Mr. Benevides concluded.

Update: Although the official statement refers to Easypay and the Easy Pay website, the correct website is www.easypark.bm.

Is this a recession ? Everybody catch the ferry/bus and check COH LATER!!

Slight error – The website you should refer to is http://www.easypark.bm and not http://www.easypay.bm.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. The Easy Pay references are all direct quotes from the City, but we added an update to the correct site.

There goes our Payroll Tax Deduction! I knew it was too good to be true.

  4. My two cents says:

I am so glad I ride a bike or take the bus. I understand that some need to drive their cars to town, but you may ask yourself if you REALLY need to drive your car into town. I see lots of cars coming into town with ONE person in them. Perhaps think about car pooling with people on your route when possible.

    • Don't Assume says:

It is not always that simple. Some of us have things to do after work. um just saying thats all…..

  5. RobbieM says:

This will deter even more people from shopping in Hamilton!

  6. Sarah says:

The $55 monthly bus/ferry pass is a good deal, if it’s feasible for you to take it.
Now, the strike issue is another thing…

  7. Looking for a spot says:

Remember when ALL the parking was free? Yeah, and the whole area down there at Bulls Head was a FREE car park!

Remember when CoH put up all those nice Lights up around Christmas?

Remember when it was free to park outside the Post office?

Remember when there were so many more parking spaces in Hamilton before they started closing off parking for more trucks, Police use only, crossing islands and outdoor dining?

We get less, it costs more and they are still chip, chip, chipping away at what used to be free… and is now illegal?

So with all this extra revenue CoH make off the parking than they had back in the day, what are we really getting back for it?

We sure have more traffic in Hamilton as people have to circle the block three or four times looking for a spot…

So sad some will never be able to remember it as it was and will grow up locked into this new BS parking system.

Anybody coming from the West feel like picking me up mornings. When will the increases cease!

  9. UncleElvis says:

What about people that don’t go into town all the time?

Will they have to buy one of those machines for a once a week/once a month visit?

This seems counterintuitive to me. As RobbieM said, this will deter even more people from coming into town to shop. “Buy Bermuda”? I would, but it’s too much of a pain in the ass to go to town.

And Looking? I remember when there were parking spots in town… why they put those giant planters which very quickly became trash receptacles and continue to block the flow of foot traffic to this day, I’ll never know. They certainly didn’t beautify the city…

not to mention these things gettin stolen outa ppls cars! really Coh has achieved a new low. wat really r they gonna do with this money

  10. Triangle Drifter says:

I guess I am one of the lucky ones. Bought a whole bunch of vouchers just before the price went up the last time. Best investment ever made especially as on book lasts at least a month. My car only gets used if the weather is wet or I need to pick up something that cannot be carried on a bike.

Is parking in Hamilton really that expensive. how much is municipal parking elsewhere? A major city can run $800 per month. Using the Bermuda model of 100% over US prices parking here should be $1600 per month.

How much is it in smaller US towns?

Yeah, its a PIA to drive a car to town to shop or any other reason for a short visit. The carparks are clogged with all day parkers, parkers who wonder why nobody shops their stores.

Perhaps the COH should provide incentives for car pooling. The COH needs the $ to make up for the shortfall Government took in wharfage fees. Don’t like the new fees? Blame Government for your increased costs.

  12. wth says:

that is selfish! look at the bigger pic. by carpooling saves money in gas and now parking. we got way to many cars on the road in this island as it is. time to make a change
