World Book Day & Devonshire Preschool

February 24, 2011

Birthdays are a time for giving…at least that is the motto of Nikita Robinson, dynamic voice of Hott1075 Ladies Room, who will be celebrating her birthday on March 3. To her delight, Ms Robinson discovered her special day coincided with a world-wide celebration called World Book Day which promotes the enjoyment of reading and books.

1. SPONSORS WITH NIKITA ROBINSON

Ms Robinson, instead of asking for gifts, decided to give one– a gift of a book to every nursery and preschool child in Bermuda as her birthday present to them. So this energetic, charismatic lady set about to establish a promotion, encouraging the public, as well as local businesses, to donate books to the island’s nursery schools. And not just any book, mind you—a cross section of books, with emphasis on supporting local authors that she personally selected.

Two of the books on Ms Robinson’s list, local author J.K. Aspinall’s Gombey Baby and Goodnight Bermuda, accompanied by the sponsors who made their purchase possible, made an early appearance at the Devonshire Preschool. A sneak preview of things to come, principal Mrs. Delia Foley, will distribute the books on their special day of March 3 when the children can all revel in the sounds of Gombey Baby’s Ratta…Tat…Tat.

Sponsors, Georgio Zanol of Lindos Family Stores, Norma Cross and Judy Lee, representing Outerbridge’s Sherry Peppers, and Chris Marshall of Cartridge World, interacted with the school’s fifty children during their assembly. An added treat, for both children and teachers, was the appearance of seventeen-month-old Norhyon Brown, model for Gombey Baby, who was accompanied by his mother, Dy-Juan DeRoza Brown.

Norhyon, who makes himself at home wherever he goes, is featured in photo albums with students in all the schools he has visited in: www.facebook.com/GombeyBaby.

Ms Robinson’s dream of helping over 1400 children is being fulfilled. Many of the schools have been adopted, but there are more to go, so she is encouraging sponsors to step forward.

Senator Jeanne Atherden has sponsored Warwick Preschool for Gombey Baby. Senator Michael Dunkley and Suzann Roberts Holshouser will be sponsoring two schools with both Gombey Baby and Goodnight Bermuda.

Members of the public can purchase Gombey Baby, Goodnight Bermuda and the other book titles at Brown’s Bookmart, one of the main promoters, where a box is provided for the nursery school donations. Robertson’s Drugstore, the Craft Market plus other book outlets on the island carry the titles as well. For quantity and case lot purchases by business sponsors, contact: www.pina.bm
