Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Expedition

March 5, 2011

Yesterday evening [Mar.4] a Duke of Edinburgh pre-expedition event was held at the BHS School Gymnasium.

“On Friday March 4 about 200 of our island’s youth will unite to prepare for what could very well be their most exciting adventure yet,” said a spokesman for organisers the Bermuda Award National Expedition [BANX]. “They will engage in non-competitive and community-building activities as they strive to reach one common goal: to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition and ultimately receive the Bronze Award.”

Below Fiona Lewis explains the weekend’s activities:

Bermuda’s first island-wide Bronze Qualifying Journey will see Bronze Participants hiking all over the island during the day today and tomorrow. In addition, they will participate in a Youth & Community Development Programme, as well as an overnight camp on Port’s Island this evening.

“In addition to there being a large number of Bronze participants, there will also be many of Bermuda’s Award leaders and assessors-in-training at the event,” said a spokesperson. “The weekend will be full of zest, as a number of activities have been organised by approved activity provider Chewstick. They include: open group discussions, creative performances, a youth forum, leadership and social awareness development. Such entertainment will be provided in a safe, nurturing and natural environment.”

Although this initial year is solely open to Bronze medal participants, the 2012 event will welcome both Bronze and Silver participants. In the summer of last year, 17 teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19 undertook their Silver and Gold expeditions, participating in a 2-week long expedition in the jungles of Guyana.

The three-level Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme was introduced to Bermuda in 1967 and offers participants who successfully complete its activities Bronze, Silver and Gold medals.

Their Royal Highnesses The Prince and Princess Edward, Earl and Countess of Wessex, will visit Bermuda on March 16th, 2011. The main purpose of their visit is to celebrate The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in Bermuda.

Prince Edward is a Trustee of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation and Chairman of the International Council. The Award Programme, which operates in 132 countries, was set up by his father, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in 1956.

While in Bermuda Prince Edward will present Gold Awards to young people who have achieved that standard, and both will meet many young people and volunteers who are participating in the programme at approved Award centres and visit other educational institutions.
