“I Was Starving & Needed a Little Snack”

March 3, 2011

This morning [Mar.3] in Magistrates Court 52-year-old Elizabeth Shawler pleaded guilty to stealing goods to the value of $16.95 from the Marketplace in Hamilton.

She was said to have taken a cutting board, baby wipes, coconut cream, diswashing liquid, and Pringles chips.

The incident occurred on 28 January 2011 and she was stopped outside Marketplace after she had been seen placing items in her handbag and had then walked past the Marketplace cashiers.

Having heard the evidence, Ms Shawler was asked by the Magistrate why she had taken the items and replied, “I had no money in the bank. I was starving and just needed a little snack.”

Asked by the Magistrate where she lived, she said she lived in a little studio apartment on Woodbourne Avenue and had been working as a packer in the Supermart on Front Street. However she had lost her job there and was not currently working.

Prior to bag-packing, she had been working as a House Cleaner, but had found the long hours too much as she regularly had to work from 9:00am to 8:00pm.

Taking into consideration that all the stolen goods had been recovered at full value, the Magistrate ordered a Social Inquiry Report and a return to Court on 18 April for sentencing and final disposition.

    Starving? Please….

Thats what I call a high fibre diet.

    (1) Cutting Board….woody nutrients

    (2) Baby Wipes….lots of fibre

    (3) Dishwashing Liquid…….Laxative

    (4) Coconut Cream…..Making curried ‘all of the above’.

    (5) Pringles Chips…….to fattening and full of carbohidrates

Maybe I am wrong here but thats one hell of a way to make fibre “Sushi”………

This lady needs help. I hope she gets it along with many others that are in need.

    Desperate times.

Unfortunate times make for unfortunate decisions. A true case of a person in hard times. This is just the beginning effect from the economic downfall. Normally it is a case of a person caught shoplifting liquor from the market place. I feel so sorry that this woman at 52 years of age .

Agree – the long hours were too much?? Boo Hoo – it’s called work, it’s a job! Put in the hours, take home the paycheck – that’s how it works. LAZY, LAZY, LAZY! What a great role model for her children. SMH! And she’ll probably get off with a slap on the wrist. She should at least be forced to dust and vacuum the courtroom before she gets a ride home!

Guys, she’s 52 years old and we don’t know what mental or physical ailments she may have. A cleaning job that lasts 11 hours a day will tire even a strong young man. Also, we don’t know what the pay was either. Personally I’d do what it takes but I am able bodied.
