Two Men Charged: Armed Robbery

March 21, 2011

This morning [Mar.21] two men appeared in Magistrates Court in connection with the armed robberies last week, facing over ten charges between them, including using a firearm – which was an imitation.

19-year-old Jaron Roberts and 18-year-old Kamrone Whiting, both of St George’s, were charged in connection with the robberies which occurred in various parishes including Pembroke, Warwick, and Paget on March 14th and 15th.

Before Magistrate Archie Warner, the pair were charged with a number of offences, including multiple counts of robbery or attempted robbery on 14th and 15th March 2011 and with using a firearm in committing those offences; receiving stolen goods; theft and attempted burglary. These offences were said to have taken place in parishes including Warwick, Paget, Pembroke, and Hamilton parish.

For two of the charges laid for offences said to have been committed on 14 March 2011, the Prosecutor has alleged that the pair also acted with another person who is not yet before the Court.

Lawyer Mark Pettingill appearing for one defendant and holding for lawyer Marc Daniels who was said to be representing the other defendant, pointed out that the firearm was known to be an imitation firearm. The Magistrate said that this made no difference, Mr Pettingill agreed that at this stage that was correct, and the pair were remanded into custody.

The case was adjourned until later this month, when both accused should re-appear with their legal representatives. The Prosecutor had no objection to this.

After last week’s armed robbery spree which saw bike riders forced off their bikes, the Police released the following statement:

Between 10:30pm and 11:45pm on Monday, March 14th 2011 Police received several reports of robberies and attempted robberies having taken place in the Devonshire, Pembroke and Warwick areas.

The victims of these offences were motorcycle riders and the suspects were also on a motorcycle. During the incidents one of the suspects brandished what appeared to be a firearm.

The suspects are described as two young black men believed to be in their 20s; one brown skinned the other of darker complexion, both wearing dark coloured clothing and helmets with visors traveling on a white motorcycle.

Two men were arrested shortly afterwards in connection with these occurrences and have been assisting investigators with their inquiries.

Around 11pm on Tuesday March 15th 2011 police received a report of a further robbery in similar circumstances which occurred in Paget. Shortly afterwards police officers observed persons fitting the description of the suspects and pursued them. After a high speed chase the offending cycle was lost in the Devonshire area.

Check points were put in place leading to the recovery of what is believed to be an imitation firearm and the arrest of three persons who are assisting police with their inquiries.

It is too early to confirm any links between the robberies on Monday the 14th and the robbery on Tuesday the 15th but we are considering this possibility. Police are working closely with the victims to build a comprehensive picture of events.

Officers investigating these crimes are continuing to appeal for anyone with any information about these incidents to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011 or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.

      Or NYC, London, Belfast,Rome,Toronto…is there a point that you are attempting to make?

  3. DARRIN DIZZLE says:

    Wow! Good going guys. Jaron and Kamrone for Mayor in 2012. Here we have two role models that are doing great things in their communities. They are definitely a credit to the Bermudian people. I wish every young man out there would follow in their footsteps by completing high school with honors and becoming rocket scientists without even going to college.
    Jaron and Kamrone spend every waking hour on learning new things or helping old ladies cross the street. They recently met with the president of Piggly Wiggly to discuss their research on how to turn gas into petrol which they hope will break Bermuda’s dependency on foreign fuel sources. These young men just scream intelligent when you look at them. Currently they are locked away in a secret lab trying to decipher a line from the ancient scrolls. They cracked the first sentence which translates to El hard heado makest el soft bum!
    Whatever that means!??!?!?

      13 years at west gate……hell that ain’t too bad. 3 squares per day, cable tv, clothes washed and ironed, and they get to spend one night per month with their girlfriend…..in the bungalow

    • Actslikeaduck..... says:

      Don’t be too quick to judge. I know one of them as he is a the son of a very close friend son; and, belive it or not, he is intelligent. He has made a very very ‘dumb’ choice and will obviously have to suffer the consequences.

      Just so you know both his parents have been in his life 200% and they are two of the most amazing people I know and so is he by the way.

      No, he may not have the equation to turn gas into petrol as you mention above. But he is loved.

      This baffles anyone that knows him and his family; he had absolutely no reason or cause whatsoever.

      What I did notice this morning is he had numerous support but his co-accused did not. There was noone to be seen to support him.

      Not everything is as it appears. He comes from a good home , does not want or need for anything ……………..sometimes your children just make some dumb choices and hang with people that don’t have good intentions and this is the result. You can’t change what has happend you can only deal with it and learn and this I think he will, a hard way mind you, but lesson never the less but much heartache for people that love him. He will no doubt in my mind regret this and I hope he gets to make amends. Thanks for allowing me to express myself.

      GOD Bless!

      • Terry says:

        Out of your 200%, there was still something missing and therein lies the rub. Not wanting anything material is neither here nor there.

        • Actslikeaduck..... says:

          Hi Terry,

          Not wanting in material nor emotional support is what I said. He is loved. BTW, Do you have children; if so do you know what they do all the time or what they have done? Maybe something was missing but there is something missing in a lots of us, including me and probably you too. I did crazy senseless stuff when I was yonger and God I am glad I did not get in troube for it. But I learned and I am glad I did and to be honest there was nothing my parents did that was wrong. I was loved had clothing and shelter. So, not sure why we do the things we do sometimes. Maybe I liked the intensity, who knows. You just never know. It would be harder for a person to understand when you are not that close to the situation to do so.

          Again thanks for the conversation.

          • In General says:

            Sorry – but doing senseless things as a teenager (as we all have) does not include robbing and assaulting people! At least two people were sent to hospital. This was not having fun with your buddy – these acts were completely illegal AND anti-social.

            My comment has nothing to do with the love affection and support these individuals have had from their parents. My comment is directed at two ADULTS that broke the law, and terrorized their victims! That to me demands that there is some social behavior lacking in the individuals that committed the crime.

            • DevilwearsPrada? says:

              Noone is disputing that what they are being charged for is illegal and anti-social.

              They will have to pay the price no doubt about that. Senseless meaning being a follower instead of a leader.

              Again, do you have children?

              • Black Soil says:

                I got kids, and if they did that I would make them want for jail for fear of dealing with me.

                • Ya'll are just not smart enough says:

                  LOL, good one.

                  And Actslikeaduck, if he was really intelligent, then he wouldn’t have done or even got caught for this dumb azz crap! Sounds like an idiot to me. Its guys like these two young dummies that need to be slapped by the law and every hard working Bermudian out there! Come try that crap with me, come on try it……..

      • Lineage says:

        Yeah…in a lot of situations some of these children come from good homes but they end up getting emotionally attached to the friend or bredren that has nothing or no one as they’ve pretty much got it all. Consequence is no coincidence so our youth of today know for a fact that if you do wrong there are consequences to your wrongful actions…same as if you do right. Sad really sad….

        • Actslikeaduck..... says:

          Yes very sad. Sad for all parties connected with this, Victims and accused.

          • Concerned says:

            The only sad thing for these accused is that they didn’t pick the “wrong guy” and have their asses handed to them!!! They didnt only terrorize one victim, they hit at least 4 individuals. What a shame someone didn’t knock them off they’re bike and leave them in the road to suffer!! Sick and tired of these punks and waiting for the day they mess with the wrong one!!

      • ok says:

        @Actslikeaduck…..You say dont be so quick to judge but the way youre talking sounds like you think he is guilty! Life is about choices no matter who his family is or what they are like and no matter how supportive that are. No one wants to ever accept that it is their child! It’s funny how on the Monday there were several robberies on the Tuesday it was another one, but since they have been locked up there has not been any since. Things that make you go hmmmmmmm

        • Actslikeaduck..... says:

          @ok, to judge the character of the individuals, read the post of the person I was responding to.

          Life is about choices and I am sure you have made all excellent ones, haven’t you?

          There are parents that BTW accept that their child has made bad choices and understand and accept that they have to face the consequences associated with their choices. I know I am one that strongly believes that if you make your bed your lie in it and so do others, that does not mean you cannot love them unconditionally as GOD has taught us to do.

          Good for you Columbo you solved a case!

      • DARRIN DIZZLE says:

        I hear you Actslikeaduck! Agreed. Maybe he’s just a follower or easily influenced. Trying to fit in with what he thinks is the cool crowd maybe.

        • Actslikeaduck..... says:

          You Got IT!

          • Nicole says:

            That is true actslikeaduck not ALL of these guys come from terrible homes etc. Some of these young people really do just get caught up and do whatever their friends do. Your words will be twisted because a lot of people commenting on bernews lack reading comprehension skills.

            • DevilwearsPrada? says:

              Or they really cannot see past their own lives or lack thereof. This is real life and I have a young man around this age and he had done some dumb stuff, trust me. It leaves me wondering where I went wrong, what could I have done better and some times there is no answer. I could beat myself up forever but people do some dumb things that’s what i can equate it to

              Some of us as illegal and anti-social as the person above notes just become followers for no real reason??? I know one the yougn men and I can tell you I am scratching my head.

      • Lissa says:

        Clearly he hangs around bad company.

      • Scott says:

        to be honest, as much as parenting does have the most affect in early years, at the teen years, peer influence is far far far more responsible for ones actions. the fact that everyone blames parenting on all these cases is really ignoring another equally large factor in the matter.

        • FOR REAL???? says:

          Yes actually. Having a religious fondation to rely on….knowing, smelling, feeling the difference btw RIGHT N WRONG…That’s what lacking! And where does these teachings start????

    • Jaylen says:

      You really think thats funny? Have you thought about how his family feels? That’s right Kamrone’s my little brother so back off… He’s on the news once, what gives you the right to partonize him when you don’t know a thing about him? I’m not proud of what happened, but I have faith in my brother. None of your comments are necessary.

    • His brother says:

      Please do not talk about my brother in a bad way he is a good person….don’t please

  4. east beast says:

    Dumb youts!

    • His brother says:

      He is not dumb, he makes dumb choices, he is a good person.

  5. East says:

    Smh to these 2 waldos

  6. #Thatisall says:

    East beast & East sound like Grrreat Role models… you knew them right??

  7. Bermudian says:

    Nothing but a bunch of punks. All the people in gangs are nothing but punks.

    • Actslikeaduck..... says:

      What gang? Do you know either of these men?

      • His brother says:

        Thank you for defending my brother. He is a good person and you are too.

      • whatever says:

        Who are you to judge him and say that his is in a gang because he got caught up in something that wasn’t even his fault? Did you ever think that maybe he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time or that he just hasn’t choose his friends wisely? I’m saying this because I know kamrone personally and that is not the kamrone I know. He deserves to be set free he’s a great guy!

    • His brother says:

      Please don’t that mt brother is not in a gang he is a good person. He makes dumb choices and hangs out with the wrong crowd.

  8. Job 24 says:

    1 “Why does the Almighty not set times for judgment?
    Why must those who know him look in vain for such days?
    2 There are those who move boundary stones;
    they pasture flocks they have stolen.
    3 They drive away the orphan’s donkey
    and take the widow’s ox in pledge.
    4 They thrust the needy from the path
    and force all the poor of the land into hiding.
    5 Like wild donkeys in the desert,
    the poor go about their labor of foraging food;
    the wasteland provides food for their children.
    6 They gather fodder in the fields
    and glean in the vineyards of the wicked.
    7 Lacking clothes, they spend the night naked;
    they have nothing to cover themselves in the cold.
    8 They are drenched by mountain rains
    and hug the rocks for lack of shelter.
    9 The fatherless child is snatched from the breast;
    the infant of the poor is seized for a debt.
    10 Lacking clothes, they go about naked;
    they carry the sheaves, but still go hungry.
    11 They crush olives among the terraces[a];
    they tread the winepresses, yet suffer thirst.
    12 The groans of the dying rise from the city,
    and the souls of the wounded cry out for help.
    But God charges no one with wrongdoing.

    13 “There are those who rebel against the light,
    who do not know its ways
    or stay in its paths.
    14 When daylight is gone, the murderer rises up,
    kills the poor and needy,
    and in the night steals forth like a thief.
    15 The eye of the adulterer watches for dusk;
    he thinks, ‘No eye will see me,’
    and he keeps his face concealed.
    16 In the dark, thieves break into houses,
    but by day they shut themselves in;
    they want nothing to do with the light.
    17 For all of them, midnight is their morning;
    they make friends with the terrors of darkness.

    18 “Yet they are foam on the surface of the water;
    their portion of the land is cursed,
    so that no one goes to the vineyards.
    19 As heat and drought snatch away the melted snow,
    so the grave snatches away those who have sinned.
    20 The womb forgets them,
    the worm feasts on them;
    the wicked are no longer remembered
    but are broken like a tree.
    21 They prey on the barren and childless woman,
    and to the widow they show no kindness.
    22 But God drags away the mighty by his power;
    though they become established, they have no assurance of life.
    23 He may let them rest in a feeling of security,
    but his eyes are on their ways.
    24 For a little while they are exalted, and then they are gone;
    they are brought low and gathered up like all others;
    they are cut off like heads of grain.

    25 “If this is not so, who can prove me false
    and reduce my words to nothing?”

  11. mixitup says:

    A lot of this foolishness is Gang initiation type activity. All you need is an ignorant youth who wants to “Belong” and be accepted as cool, “bud boy” etc. recipe for the ruining of a life in todays times.

  12. east beast says:

    Mixitup how u kno?aint no gangs in bermuda!dem r 2 loozas from st davids

    • smh says:

      who’s this?

    • DevilwearsPrada? says:

      Not all people from St. David’s are losers LOL and I see that you refer to yourself as East Beast, very appealing.

      Where are you from exactly, across the pond?

      In any event, our young men are making some crazy choices, they are hurting people, they are being anti-social (here’s the word again) and they are doing illegal things.

      It’s not a couple it’s becoming an epidemic here in Bermuda. We have to get to them someway. Westgate is too late!!!!

  13. East says:

    @ East Beast I agree!!!!!!!!!

  14. Makes sense! says:

    Open a love school and send them there ,they were just trying to fill a void through bad choices
    Or cry for attention .question why would anyone ride around pretending to shoot people…..too much grand theft auto maybe??????

  15. Fed Up Bermudian says:

    Our kids are hardened to the shock of crime and violence through overexposure through the media and video games. It’s no joke- if that’s what’s on the news, what passes for entertainment, and an integral part of the games they play, why are we surprised at the results? Yes, kids in previous generations played ‘cops and robbers’ and played with toy guns, but they never saw graphic visual representations of such- no blood and guts, no Royal Gazette describing things like sexual assaults or violent crimes in enough detail that they had a visual image, no blood pressure elevating video games of violent and antisocial behaviors. The shot villain just laid there, there was no pool of blood, there was no dead bodies on the autopsy table, etc.

    We are to blame- we don’t protect the innocence of the child anymore. It should NOT be okay with us that we let their senses be bombarded with negative and violent imagery, they get used to it, and it becomes their world.

    It is our duty as parents to protect their minds from violence and atrocity, so that the impact of those things is not lost on them. I screen everything my child watches, reads, or plays with. He isn’t allowed to watch something with violence in it, no blood and guts, no swearing, and as minimal bathroom humor as possible (these days, it’s hard to avoid). Sheltering my child? Yes. And I challenge anyone out there to convince me that raising him without TV, without the constant violent imagery, without violent video games is the wrong thing to do. We need to be even better parents. It’s not enough to both be there, it’s not enough to provide for them, it’s not even enough to take them to church. There’s so much out there that wasn’t when we were kids, so we have to be even more diligent still. Their world isn’t like ours was at their age.

    I’ll be damned if I let the media or video games be more influential forces in setting my child’s moral compass than I am. And that’s what happens all too often. Don’t know about this case, but I’ll bet there were many factors…

    • Ya'll are just not smart enough says:

      I feel you Fed Up!! 110%!! I have children too and these times are much harder when it comes to sheilding your child from the media, video games, school (yes I said school), etc…..like you said, just sending them to church and both parents being there is just not enough!! In my humble opinion I think the whole island, not just the parents grandparents or school teacher need to get involved in our childrens lives in order to really make a difference.

      Come on Bermuda, stand up!!

  16. whatitis says:

    well the history of these boys need to be looked at i feel it should have been nicked in the butt years ago before it escalated to this.trust and i know i put the idea out there no one listened.
