Videos: Commentators Speak Out Against SDO

March 13, 2011

As the Bermuda Senate prepares to debate the Tuckers Point SDO this Wednesday [Mar.16] a coalition of  groups opposing the SDO has produced a series of short video interviews featuring social, environmental and economic commentators including Greenrock President Andrew Vaucrosson, Chairperson of SOS Stuart Smith, Marine Biology Professor Dr. Tom Iliffe, and Cordell Riley from Citizens Uprooting Racism. The group said that additional videos will be released on Monday and Tuesday prior to the Senate debate.

Andrew Vaucrosson, President of Greenrock, explains the group’s position on the Tucker’s Point SDO. He spoke on the various aspects including economics, saying “One property is not going to be the silver bullet for tourism, there are many other aspects relating to tourism that needs to be examined.”

Cordell Riley from Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda [CURB] explains the groups position below. Mr Riley refered to the compulsory purchase order in the 1920s, saying it was supposed to be for the development of tourism, but property was also sold to homeowners, and said “the same thing is happening again.” Mr Riley said they see it as a “betrayal of the memory of the original land owners, and also to their descendants.” CURB has called for concerned locals to “quietly protest” the SDO on the Cabinet Grounds next Wednesday.

Dr. Tom Iliffe, Professor of Marine Biology from Texas A&M University, gives his position on the impact of the proposed new Tucker’s Point development on the cave systems in the area. Dr Iliffe said the “development is likely to endanger or destroy critical habitat.”

Chairperson of Save Open Space [SOS], Stuart Smith, explains the group’s position on the Tucker’s Point SDO, saying in the mid 1990s SOS objected to the first SDO, and asked “when will this trend ever end?”

A bit of advice to view the videos properly. Click on the play button and then the pause button. Allow each video to download – leaving the grey bar to move from the left of the video all the way to the right. Once completed you can then press play again.
