April 12, 2011

The date for the 2011 Rubber Duck Derby has been set for June 5, and Ordnance Island in St. George’s will once again play host to both the rubber ducks and humans.

Friends of Hospice together with BELCO today [Apr.12] launched the 15th Annual Rubber Duck Derby, with the goal of raising $145,000 in 2011.

The Rubber Duck Derby will start at 2pm on Sunday, June 5th. There will be food stalls, kiddie land with a bouncy castle, games and face painting, as well as baked goods and lots of live entertainment. The Corporate Duck Race is the first race of the day starting at 3pm. This will be followed by the Youth, Pamper Me and Family races.

Friends of Hospice Chairman, Tim Hunter, thanked the public for their support throughout the years through ticket sales and attending the races on Derby Day. He explained, “Friends of Hospice works alongside the staff of Agape House to meet the practical and emotional needs of the patients and their families in any way that they can. We are committed to the belief that we all have the right to pass our final days with dignity, peace and comfort.”

There are over 100 prizes to be won including: a 7 Day Disney Package for four from Meyer Travel, washer & dryer from Bermuda Gas & Utility, 13 inch MacBook from the istore, two night stay with dinner & golf from the Fairmont Southampton, weekend for two at the Royal Palms Hotel, a Blackberry Torch from Logic, a $500 gift certificate from Arnold’s Market, a $250 gift certificate from Miles Market, a Nintendo system from Leisure Time and much more.

Linda Smith, BELCO Senior Vice President of Corporate Relations said, “BELCO is pleased to sponsor The Rubber Duck Derby. It provides a fun way for the community to assist Agape House, the Island’s only inpatient hospice facility.”

According to Ms. Smith funds raised through the Derby have been used to fund a full time chef, a full time counsellor and art therapist, a volunteer companion programme, further education for Agape House staff as well as fund ongoing infrastructure improvements to Agape House. BELCO has sponsored the event for over a decade.

Friends of Hospice is a registered charity providing support for Bermuda’s only inpatient hospice facility, Agape House. Located on the grounds of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Paget, Agape House is part of Bermuda Hospitals Board’s Medical Programme. The hospice was originally established in April 1990, under the direction of Mrs. Hilary Soares, with a mission is to provide quality end of life care.

Rubber Duck Derby tickets are available at Agape House, BELCO, Bermuda Gas and Utility and FC Service Station (Collector’s Hill) or by calling Friends of Hospice at 232-0859. They will also be sold at grocery stores and other locations throughout Bermuda during April and May.
