FIFA: “Senseless” Bermuda Murders

May 8, 2011

fifa_logoThe president of FIFA, the world governing body of football, has sent a letter of condolence to the Bermudian football family offering his unwavering support and sympathy upon hearing news of the recent murder of two of the country’s up-and-coming football prospects.

Jason Smith, 22 and a striker with PHC football club, was shot dead on May 1. That killing came just one month after fellow footballer Randy Robinson of North Village, also 22, was gunned down.

“It is with a sad heart that I write to you today, having learned of the senseless murder of Jason Smith and Randy Robinson,” said FIFA president Joseph S. Blatter in a letter to the Bermuda Football Association.

“On behalf of FIFA and the worldwide football family, I wish to extend our condolences to you, to the Bermuda football community, and most of all, to Jason Smith and Randy Robinson’s family, friends and loved ones.”

The FIFA statement said, “Mr. Smith and Mr. Robinson were considered among the island’s best footballing prospects, and looked to have bright futures ahead of them.”

“Please let them [the family and friends of the deceased] know that today the football community stands by their side,” the FIFA president added.

“We would hope that in some way, our words of support may help bring a little bit of peace and solace in this time of sadness,” he concluded.
