“Stand Up For Bermuda. One Love”

May 5, 2011

After graffiti containing a gang name and profanity appeared on a wall by the Victor Scott school, two ladies stepped up and painted over it, replacing it with their own message “”Stand Up For Bermuda. One Love.”

The painter, who asked not to be named, said she and another lady were appalled that children should be subjected to graffiti of that nature, so they decided to do something about it themselves as they feel the community cannot sit back, but needs to get involved.

Well done ladies! That was a good idea!

    • Bubba says:

Got my support. I used to do that a lot and people would drive by and say “it’s too late.” That was 10 years ago, 5 years ago and yesterday.

  2. Organic Bermudian says:

Good for you ladies for taking ACTION!!!

  3. Kam says:

One small step is all it takes.

The community as a whole do need to get involved.

  4. Life is a gift... says:

Thank you Ladies for getting involved and actually doing somethig. There tends to be too much talk and not enough action.

  5. Bri says:

AWESOME!!!GRAND STAND LADIES!!!! This could be the beginning of seeing this message at random spots sited islandwide!!!!

    JUST SPENDID!!

  6. Sheriff says:

    Love it!

  7. erica rance-cariah says:

It is sad that this message was left there as the FIRST person that saw it should have done something about it!!! Thank you to you two “special ladies”. As I know who one of you are I am NOT surprised in the slightest. WE have the power to take our island back!!!

“Be the change that you want to see in the world” Ghandi

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

Maybe they were the “first” persons to have seen it.

      • Real Talk says:

I’m pretty sure these ladies weren’t the first to see it.
The hundreds of school children who walked past it on their way to school were.

everybody waiting for somebody to do anything means that nothing changes…

      • SM says:

Do is matter who saw it first?….Be positive and give praise to these two women for doing something about it!

        • Amen. Nuff said. Be proactive, the gov’n/police aren’t enforcing enuff, so its good the community are…

        • Real Talk says:

Yes and No. Much respect to the individuals who took it upon themselves to correct it. Not so much for the hundreds (if not thousands) of us who went across every day and did nothing. Particularly if it has been there for months as somebody suggested. We can’t afford to fail our children any longer…

  8. Real Talk says:

If you keep on shootin the only thing ya doin is givin our government more reason to shut down the streets. no one is gonne be able to make a livin on the streets with all this police intervention, and the police are gonna run this. thats the difference between now and then. theres no order in the streets, so all the bimperts and soft hustlas are guna be runnin round on their plea feals and nobody but the govt and police win. guys are doin the police’s dirty work, knowingly and unknowlingly, intentionally and unintentionally. this is a drug war. $6 billion drug war.

    • here is the solution says:

i feel that it is hard for someone who works hard everyday is considered a productive citizen who is never running afoul of the law but likes to smoke a little weed now and then cant safetly carry a few grams on them because of the idiots running around shooting and turning this island into one big or small road block SMH

      • Fed Up Bermudian says:

Sorry, I’m sick to death about people moaning about ‘I can’t have my little bit of weed’ crap. Seriously, unless you grew it yourself, you bought it from somewhere, and that somewhere is a dealer. Who himself buys from someone, who probably is in a gang, who probably has been involved in some level with these shootings. NO amoung of ‘feel-good-personal-use-it’s-so-harmless-natual’ rhetoric covers up the fact that you get your ‘little bit of weed’ from a criminal, and whether you like it or not, whether we agree with its criminalization or not, it FUELS THE GANGSTA LIFESTYLE. It’s people that buy it who are providing the economic basis for the perpetuation of gangs and yes, even killings. If you don’t mind blood on your hands, then keep doing what you’re doing.

Be sure you can live with the consequences of your actions. Whether you agree or disagree with weed being illegal, for now it is, and each and every person who smokes even recreationally or occasionally helps keep these thugs in business. I can’t live with that. I can, however, live with not taking a toke. And before you get all in my face and making assumptions- yes, I have smoked before, and I AM Bermudian. Knowing what I know now, thinking about smoking weed in the bigger context- I’m not doing it again until it’s legal and accessible, and grown legally. I for one will NOT be responsible for the death of one more of our young men. Will you?

  9. Real Talk says:

Now if we could all be encouraged to take action no matter how small and insignificant it may seem… taking back our communities requires a change in mindset and motivating the people of this island to ACT. People always wonder what they can do? This is the type of stuff that we can do to send the message that our island is important to us and we are willing to stand up against violence and anti-social behaviour.

    Well done to these ladies.
    Less talk, more ACTION.

  10. WHY NOT says:

WE should tattoo this on all gang members, even those in prison!

  11. WHY NOT says:

i have t-shirt on the way for may 24th!

  12. Lizard says:

Now, who has to come along and cover up the ” Stand up” message – graffiti in its own right.

    • Confused says:

Get over it, what they did was a good thing.

      • Anole says:

I understand what lizzy is saying … We’ve covered up one form of graffiti with another. Only locals would understand what was once there was worse , but to visitors , graffiti is not welcome and seen as intimidating.

At best it should have simply been painted over with a neutral grey colour , and I would still be thanking the ladies for taking matters into their own hands.

Maybe they would consider doing all the bus shelters now …

        • Yawn says:

Good thinking Anole. So get your butt down there and do it. Then when you are done you can get out and paint all the bus shelters yourself. Surely you dont plan to sit here and critize a well meaning effort while laying around doing nothing yourself. Thats the type of crap attitude we dont need.

And GOOD JOB to these two ladies!!

        • Real Talk says:

Yes. “One Love”… That’s absolutely terrifying. It’ll have the hundred of tourists who ride along Parsons Road looking for Horseshoe Beach quaking in their flip flops.
If you think graffiti is intimidating you should have a look at the local gangs.
Maybe YOU should consider doing a bus stop in the shade of your choice… after all, isn’t the whole point that people get involved and stop waiting for somebody else to do it?

          • Yup! says:

It could only be you c you after work for a wicked!

    • True Dat says:

Shut up lizard…. Sheesh…. :/ All of that doesn’t even matter right now! And i am almost certain not many people will be upset about the positive message that is written, enlight of our recent tragic situation

  13. gaynell says:

I applaud the two paint angels for setting the example. We have accepted this as normal but its not. Why should innocent children have be sujected to such language which tears at their self esteem. TAKE ACTION THE WHOLE OF BERMUDA AND SPEAK WITH OE VOIC-= STOP THE MADNESS VIOLENCE IS NOT THE ANSWER.

  14. Toni M Robinson says:

Thank you Ladies… We need action, not more words. May this be the catalyst for change in our Island home. Again, Thank you and Be Blessed.

  15. Terry says:

It’s a sad day when females have to come out and do this. Where are the men. Too afraid to show their faces or make a stand which to some degree makes sense.

Women give birth. I hope it is a newborn that will flourish with the help of Dad.

  16. GPS says:

    LOVE IT

  17. Onion says:

    Well Done Ladies.

  18. TB says:

Great idea for T-shirts carrying this message. Proceeds could go the charity supporting the children of the victims and hopefully get the message out?

  19. reality check says:

Great job ladies! The youth of Bermuda needs to see more positive messages such as this one.

  20. KG says:

Don’t stop at just T-shirts- go for stylish tank tops, dresses, scafs… everything! We are one of the only countries that don’t take enough pride to walk around in gear with our country’s name written on it. Think about how many Jamacians proudly don their flag, country colors and name… we need to start taking pride in our country and maybe it’ll then turn into what we want it to be.

  21. cocoa says:

Glad to see it has been painted over. I usually walk pass there and the bad words have been on that wall for a few months now. Good job ladies!

  22. The Cross Eyed Bear says:

    Well done Ladies!

  23. Winnie says:

For thoes who are moaning,FYI there is graffiti and then there are “positive words” so which one do you think the words Stand Up for Bda fall under, mmmmmmmmmmm. GREAT JOB ladies all this negativity round here, time for something else.

  24. True Dat says:

Ladies You Have started a positive movement with this positve gesture
    and thats whats Up!!:)

  25. Terry says:

LaVerne, are you serious? I mean jingus….all jokes aside but your comment is assinine. Re think what you wrote.

In reality, if it worked that way everything would be solved by first responders and emotions?
