Island Games: Six More Medals, First Gold

[Updated] Bermuda’s medals at the 2011 Island Games continue to pile up, with six more medals confirmed – including Bermuda’s first Gold.

In the Sailboarding Individual Event Scott Mello won a Bronze, in the Laser Radial Rig event Jason Saints won a Bronze, in the Sailing Team event Bermuda won a Bronze and Bermuda’s Sailboarders picked up our first Gold Medal of these games in the Team Event.

In addition, Shianne Smith – the Bermuda National Heptathlon Record holder – has turned out spectacular performances to win four medals in total. After previously winning two, today [June 30] she won a Silver in the 400m Hurdles Women and a Silver in the Long Jump Women. She is pictured above receiving her medal, and speaks with us in the video below after her medal winning performance.

Bermuda’s athletes have combined to win a total of 11 medals in the Isle of Wight so far. Bermuda’s first two medals, came when Sean Trott finished the half marathon in 1:12:22 to give Bermuda our first medal of these Games, and his teammate Stephen Allen finished 11th in a time of 1:16.11, giving Bermuda the bronze medal in the team competition. Shianne Smith won the Bronze Medal in the Women’s Shot Putt and a Silver Medal in the Women’s 100m Hurdles, and Melissa Clarke grabbed a Silver Medal in the Women’s 400m
