Murder Trial: Guns Used In Other Shootings

June 3, 2011

David Cox Bermuda June 1 2011-1-4Yesterday [June 2] an expert witness testified that the guns used in the murder of Yankee Rawlins were used in a number of other shootings.

32-year-old David Jahwell Cox [pictured] of Club Road, Smiths is charged with premeditated murder and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence. He denies the charges.

On August 9th 2010, 47-year-old Raymond Troy “Yankee” Rawlins was gunned down in the entrance of Spinning Wheel nightclub on Court Street.

The court previously heard that Mr Rawlins was shot 16 times, viewed the CCTV footage of the shooting and heard that Mr Cox’s DNA was on a baseball cap found outside the crime scene, as well as on a glove found in a trash can by the getaway car.

An expert testified that the guns used to kill Mr Rawlins were used in over half a dozen shootings, including the murder of James Lawes who was killed during a triple shooting on Court Street last year, and the murder of Kimwandae Walker who was gunned down during Good Friday celebrations on the Victor Scott field last year.

The guns were also linked to additional shootings, including the wounding of two people at Dandy Town in 2010, the attempted murder of Jeremiah Dill on Parsons Road, and other shootings in the Pembroke area.

This is far from the first time the Court has heard that a gun used in a murder was linked to other shootings. Last month during the Kevin Warner murder trial, evidence was presented that the gun used to kill Dekimo Martin was also used in the Colford Ferguson murder, the attempted murder of Randy Lightbourne and in at least two separate shootings in which there were no victim.

During the Supreme Court murder trial of Antonio Myers in March 2011, the Court heard that the two guns used to kill Kumi Harford were “Parkside weapons,” and have been used in a number of shootings including at least four other murders.

Testimony presented was that the guns were used in a host of other shootings including the murders of Perry Puckerin, Shane Minors, Kenwandee “Wheels” Robinson and attempted murder of Jakai Harford – Kumi Harford’s brother. In addition to those four shootings, the Court also heard that one of the guns was used to murder 34-year-old Freddy Maybury, who was shot in June 2010 in Sandys.

During the Town Hall Meeting last month, Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief said it may be less than a dozen guns in use in the island, as many victims have been shot with the same weapon. He also said at times the gunmen may run out of ammunition.

Mr Cox is alleged to be one of two men involved with the murder of Mr Rawlins, charges which he denies.

The case continues….

    • yeah , right ... says:

If you have any such information that would lead to a ground shaking revelation about crime in Bermy and who’s involved , to the degree that it would seem to give you a personal sense of ‘vengeance’ or glee , why don’t YOU start giving up some of this shattering never before thought of information and change the way ‘WE’ all think, forever ….

      • True Dat says:

  2. Can't seem to believe says:

I feel that this is really sad, 8 shootings same gun. Bermuda law needs to get tougher, I remember they stated a time before that once you have being caught with the a gun you will be held accountable for everything to due with that gun. Another suggestion instead of separating the criminals whilst they are locked up let them fight it out up there to see who really is the gangsters now that there are no guns in Prison. An I mean not let the whole gang out together but put three or four of those members together and lets see if they fight or if they make out there difference because they are really not thugs, and are just so called followers that where lead into the wrong direction by ther so callef frenemies.

  3. J says:

Live by the trigger, cause no father figure, means he don’t got a n$#ga, coming round to guide a n%$ga…

    • The mon says:

      Weak and dumb

    • White Christ says:

How you figure having no father must lead to the trigger?
A real “n!gg@” becomes a digger, finds the gold cause he’s bigger!

  4. Baba says:

FREE DAVID!! There are many supporting you!! KEEP YOUR HEAD UP CUZ THEY CAN’T KEEP A GOOD MAN DOWN

    • Truth says:

You would have to define “good man” for me to understand better where you are coming from.

      • White Christ says:

He’d have to define ‘Baba’ to me because it sounds like ‘Bubba’ up Westgate trying to groom his new girlfriend early.

    • Be for real says:

HOW NASTY OF YOU TO SAY SUCH A THING

      • OU812 says:

No nastier than pumping 16 shots into an unarmed man…..

  5. tell it like it is says:

if you put them in jail n let them fight! do you think it will get better or worse when they get out? these are people not animals. we need to find a better way than sorting out war with war! im just saying

  6. john says:

i use to have this bredren as a summer student fixing bikes with me in the early ninties he was a quite and cool youth,i was a slightly older then him so i saw him when he was allowed to start hanging out [you know, clubbing ,,dances an sh%t] i watched the streets turn him into a monster,,, messed up

  7. The mon says:

Tru Dat @BDA never seem to want to go after the big heads cause the don’t know where it going to lead. How many times have they stop people in the airport off of ship instead of following them they catch them blame them for bring drugs to our country like they just woke up in (Bermuda favorite whipping boy) Jamaica hmmm yah mon me gone take some drugs to bermuda Mon and make some money mon. The Bermudian that set that up could be that costum officer or police officers cousin or brother or sister or link to a big family (meaning really really rich) lol this same guy that was killed has been living like a king for how many years and they could have taken him down in crazy ways but never did the how he built was crazy did they audit him or his father like they do real business people to find out where he got the money to build it and if it in another person name where did they get the money for it they could have but I don’t think so. But the point is going after the big fish has been a long standing problem in BDA.

  8. john says:

i said this years ago,, the music ,,,i will say it again “the music” is destroying the youth [and pac and biggie was a BIG, BIG, BIG, part of it]…. exposure to dumb s$#t though cable and tv comes second,,,,computer age is here to finish them off…………but who cares?… really,,,,,,parents pleeeeeaaaassssee be the ones to guide them,,

    • Truth says:

      That is Truth my friend.

    • White Christ says:

      The parents need guidance!
Question is……will they admit that and seek it where they know they should?

    • Bryan says:

Tupac was an edifying influence on the youth, he spoke about what he saw not what he wanted to happen on the streets. If you had listened to him like the powers that be should have listened to Bermy’s youth then a lot of the current issues may have been avoided. What,.. you think Pac and Biggie started people killing each other in the hood’s? Go back to the US government bringing cocaine into the Ghettos of America and then you will start to get to the root of the problem. And the same scenario took place in Bermuda, and just like in America the ones making the real money off of the bloodshed maintain ” plausible deniability”. Study the world’s history before coming out with ill informed speculation about guys like Tupac who actually cared about their communities!

      • Truth says:

        The truth:

        1. The US government did not force people to sell drugs to other people. People with no love for others saw it as a means to get rich (and still do).

        2. Tupac was, and is an influence. For the most part, he is a bad one. For impressionable minds, he glamorized that gangster life. He made it appealing and attractive. Money. Cars. Guns. Women. Isn’t that what we are seeing in our young men today? No real substance. If I feed my child a steady diet of trash with LITTLE nutrition (it wasn’t all trash), should I be surprised when my child gets sick? More importantly, is it accurate to push the blame onto the government, society or anything else? We have to take responsibility and that starts with us being honest about the things that we like.

        3. Wild conspiracies unsupported by a thread of evidence is unhelpful.

        • Notnice at all says:

I disagree with the idea of wild conspiracy’s. Research Freeway Ricky Ross on the internet and you would see how crack cocaine was introduced on the streets of LA and to the world. Also to comment on Tupac yes he did emphasise a thug life which he was living but Tupac wanted to really see progress of his people. The music industry and the media hyped him up and made everyone believe he was a terrible person when in fact before he died he was gonna create his own soverign nation, meaning his own government, schools, create jobs, and even print his own money. I encourage you to research his death and also the demonic music industry that WE ALL love.

  9. SMH says:

Coxy I love you! Keep your head up and stay strong

    • Truth says:

Turning a blind eye to error and folly is not love. It is the opposite, in fact. And positioning like someone is a victim when their decisions have led them to their current position is delusional. If we loved each other like we ought, we would man up (or woman up) and tell them the truth.

“This life that you are living ends in one of 2 ways, dead or in jail”

“Being born in the hood is not a life sentence, you have the ability to honestly elevate yourself and your family, I am prepared to help”

We have a warped sense of true love. If as many people truly loved him, as they claim, would he be in this current predicament? A little food for thought.

  10. MinorMatters says:

Because I am more interested in getting the guns off the street (to minimize future fun murders), I would be prepared to offer a lesser sentence to the convicted criminal for the correct information to all the questions raised by True Dat:

Most importantly: 1) Where are the guns AND who specifically owns them or controls them? Then I would hope the Bermuda Police Service would make good with this information provided. No deal unless Guns are found…this would not be another case of WMD, never been found.

    • True Dat says:

@ MinorMatters… Yes You understand Perfectly what I am saying!!!
people need to stop getting offended
      when Real Questions Get asked!!!

As it Stands Bermy needs to get to the root of this problem Period!!
Who is the Big Cheese???? Collecting on these Deaths???

People are like they want to turn a blind eye to these facts and these Questions!!!

  11. MinorMatters says:

    oops “gun” murders

  12. LMNOP says:

Keep ya Head Up David you have a lot of ppl in your corner

    • White Christ says:

David, it’s having people like lmnop in your corner that’s gotten you here in the first place. You don’t need them. They’ll cheer you straight on to your death! Oh wait David you can’t actually read what we are saying here can you? I guess that means your ‘corner’ prefer to pleasure themselves with the ‘idea’ of reaching you.
Some people call that loyalty. I call it verbal masturbation!

      • Truth says:

Exactly. If the past is any indication of the future, we will see no further sensible posts from the likes of SMH or lmnop on this string. It amazes me how much people comfort themselves with these meaningless words. I assure you, they mean nothing to a man who is living is a cage like an animal because of his poor decisions. “stay strong”‘ “keep ya head up”, ” you have a lot of ppl in ya corner” All empty words designed to give the writer a sense that he is not deserting and is doing something meaningful to support when in fact, that is exactly what is happening. If you were in his corner, you have have told him the truth. In my opinion, a “friend” who doesn’t have the courage to speak the truth is worse than an enemy that lies. You expect your enemy to lie to you…

        • White Christ says:

          Now that’s the truth!

          • Ganja mon says:

damn you people must be perfect! All you do is bash any support of the guy because he’s on trial..smh

            • OU812 says:

Lol – ‘you people must be perfect’! Literally LMAO! We may not be perfect, but we arent murderers……

            • Truth says:

Lay off the weed. You **COMPLETELY** missed the point. In simpler terms, these empty notes of “support” on Bernews are not support at all. Go back up read the previous posts.

        • SMH says:

Yes I do love MY family David..Just bcuz someone has been accused of doing whatever that doesnt mean that I not going to love them anymore. If thats the case I didnt love them from the start. I do not have to agree or like what they do or do not do, but at the end of the day, its their life! I bet you if I was to write something bad about him a crapload of ya’ll will have a positive response. I put posted that i love him and I do, so all of you that feel you need to say something to this post frig you not interested!

  13. wondering says:

keep ya head up……..the biggest bunch of hogwash i hear these days. we are a nation of fools going to hell in a handbasket who continuously dumb ourselves down and support what can be said to be obviously wrong……..picture this….
    barber shop
suspected drug dealer – caught red handed in a t@xi with drugs and $$$
complains that he is a hussla and de man is harassing ni**az tryna make a dolla….

fails to see that the drug trade (and liquor for alla u zealots) is ruining our country

equates hussla peddling drugs to a struggla making a dolla all whilst poisoning his own countrymen (black white purple green who cares)

mentality in dis cunt-ry is wack…………………
