Video Trailers: Weekend Film Series

June 14, 2011

An award-winning documentary about the worldwide bee crisis, and a French action thriller that was nominated for a 2011 Academy Award® are the featured films at the ‘Weekend Film Series’ this coming Sunday, June 19.

Queen of the Sun: What are the Bees Telling Us? has won awards at festivals in Maui, Memphis, Syracuse, Nashville, Rhode Island – and has also been honoured at the Planet in Focus environmental film festival, as well as by the International Documentary Association. It will screen at 3 p.m. on Sunday.

The film is an in-depth investigation to discover the causes and solutions behind Colony Collapse Disorder, a phenomenon where honeybees vanish from their hives, never to return. Taking us on a journey through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of the beehive, this engaging and ultimately uplifting film weaves an unusual and dramatic story of the heartfelt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and philosophers from around the world. Together they reveal both the problems and the solutions in renewing a culture in balance with nature.

Bermudian beekeeper Quincy Burgess will provide an update on Bermuda’s bee situation, and take part in a Q and A session after the film.

Outside the Law was one of five films nominated this year for the Foreign Language Film Academy Award®. Likened by one critic to Godfather-Part II, the film is an action thriller that tells the story of three brothers, living in Paris, who lead the guerrilla battle for Algerian independence. It will screen at 5 p.m. on Sunday

The film is mostly set in the retro light of the late 1950s in the red-light district of Pigalle and the shanty towns around Paris. Algerian immigrants in fedoras and wide-lapelled suits behave like Mafia dons — except that their purpose is political. The film packs a punch — this is a tense, historical drama on a grand scale.

Tickets, $15, can be purchased in the Oceans Gift Shop at the BUEI, or by calling 297-7314. The ‘Weekend Film Series’, sponsored by Gosling’s, is a joint production of Bermuda Documentary Film Festival director Duncan Hall and the BUEI.
