Allied World Supports Young Environmentalists

July 19, 2011

Hundreds of children are connecting with nature this summer through the Bermuda Zoological Society’s Aqua Camps—thanks to a $15,000 gift from Allied World Assurance Company.

The funding is helping to support the holiday education programme for kids aged four to 11. The annual one-week camps offer youngsters a chance to connect with nature and learn about endangered species and habitats through hands-on activities, including marine snorkel expeditions aboard the BZS boat Endurance, and fieldtrips to the Island’s national parks aboard the BZS bus.

“Allied World is proud to sponsor charitable organisations in the communities where our employees live and work. Bermuda is one of the company’s largest branch offices and the local charity committee continually looks for partnerships with organisations that support education, the environment and culture,” says Pegi Croucher, chairwoman for Allied World’s Bermuda charity committee.

“The BZS is a leader in environmental education and conservation and the Aqua Camps are a great hands-on learning experience for children. We are pleased to take part again this summer.”

It’s the third consecutive year Allied World has given BZS a grant for its top-rated education programme, which boosts the science curricula of 6,000 students each year.

Included are classes at Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo, fieldtrips to reefs and nature reserves, teaching kits for educators, and popular holiday programmes such as the summertime Aqua Camps that deliver environmental education to children—often incorporating cutting-edge primary research from BZS’s own scientists.

Allied World has long been dedicated to environmental education through BZS, the support charity for BAMZ that funds a full slate of education programmes, conservation and research projects, and community outreach events to spread the message of protecting island environments. “Educating tomorrow’s environmentalists is our mission and we remain firmly committed to that goal,” says BZS Development Director Lynda Johnson.

Adds BZS Education Officer Joseph Furbert: “We work hard to show our young people the value of our natural environment so they can protect it in the future. Without the support of sponsors like Allied World, we simply could not do it.”
