Police Warning: E-Mail Scam

July 15, 2011

The Bermuda Police Service issued an advisory today [July 15] warning the public about phishing e-mails and scams.

A Police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service Financial Crime Unit would like to remind the public to be vigilant with regard to phishing e-mails and scams that attempt to obtain personal information or money.”

“In particular, a fake email is currently circulating locally claiming to be from the US State Department. The apparently personalised email says that the recipient has been selected to receive a ‘United States Permanent Resident Card’ for a sum of money.”

“However, the US State Department does not solicit funds by e-mail.”

“It is important not to release any personal information or money to unknown individuals who attempt to make contact through unsolicited emails.”

“Some of the signs of a phishing email or scam are:

• Poor grammar in the initial correspondence or response e-mail.
• If the response e-mail asks for personal information such as your social insurance number.
• If the response e-mail requires you to part with money.”

“Remember – if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. The Financial Crime Unit can be contacted on 295-0011.”
