Bermuda Contingent To Travel To Atlanta

August 29, 2011

This week the Minister of Business Development and Tourism Patrice Minors will lead a Bermuda delegation to the affluent Buckhead area of Atlanta this week to further solidify a “Sister Community” agreement with the distinguished Buckhead Coalition.

Minister Minors is leading a delegation that includes the Mayor of Hamilton Charles Gosling; Chamber of Commerce President Stephen Todd; Michelle Khaldun, Acting Permanent Secretary, Business Development and Tourism; William Griffith, Director of Tourism; Jasmin Smith, Assistant Director of Tourism and Travis Gilbert Legislative Assistant, Ministry of Business Development and Tourism.

The partnership, organised by the Ministry of Business Development and Tourism, seeks to generate economic development and tourism among the citizens of both destinations.

Residents will recall that a delegation from the Buckhead Coalition travelled to Bermuda in May on AirTran Airways’ inaugural flight in order to exchange formal proclamations and establish the partnership. On this recipricol visit the Bermuda delegation will be guests of the Buckhead Coalition.

The Buckhead Coalition, a chamber of commerce-type nonprofit organization consisting of prominent CEOs from the northern quadrant of the city, represents 28 square miles with approximately 76,000 affluent residents.

Minister Minors said, “We are excited about the opportunity to meet with influential business leaders from the Buckhead area, which is easily one of the most desirable and prestigious regions in the entire US.

“We were very happy to show off our destination to the Buckhead Coalition representatives during their visit to the Island in May and we’re hopeful that our meetings with them will further solidify this new alliance, which we hope will encourage travel between the two destinations and ultimately stimulate both economies.”

The group will meet with area business leaders on Wednesday (August 31), morning at the offices of The Buckhead Coalition before touring the area and visiting additional business establishments during the day. A press conference with local media will be followed on Wednesday evening with a reception and dinner hosted by the Buckhead Coalition.

According to Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell, former Mayor of Atlanta, the visit by the Bermuda contingent is highly anticipated and expected to be fruitful.

“We see tremendous economic value to our developing relationship with Bermuda,” said Mr. Massell. “Among other similarities, both Buckhead and Bermuda are not only highly desirable tourist destinations but also respected centers for business as well. We were very impressed by our recent visit to Bermuda and now look forward to showing this prestigious delegation why we feel Buckhead and Bermuda are a great fit.”

On Thursday (September 1), Minister Minors will carry Bermuda’s message to the local Atlanta media with interviews and meetings with top outlets. Minister Minors will be interviewed on two of CBS Radio’s local affiliate stations, Dave-FM and WVEE-FM, during the popular morning drive period and she will later that morning make an appearance on WXIA-TV’s (NBC) “Atlanta & Company”.

She is also scheduled to meet with editors from The Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper and regional magazines The Atlantan and Points North before returning home to Bermuda on Friday.
