Bermuda Invitational Basketball Tournament

The Bermuda Invitational Basketball Tournament got underway last night [Aug.1] inside the Bermuda College Gymnasium with a double header.

Massachusetts Pride defeated a Bermuda Select in the first game 51 – 19, Pride had Handley and Laponi both score 9 points, while Akeyla Furbert and Janelle Simmons both scored 6 points for the Bermuda Select.

In game two the New York Future Stars defeated the Bermuda Select 52 – 20. Rachel led the Future Stars with 16 points, while Maye added 12 points, Furbert scored 10 points to led the Bermuda Select, while Simmons chipped in with 6 points.

This evening [Aug.2] the two winners from yesterday [Ma Pride Elite and Future Stars] will play, and tomorrow from 4:00pm to 6:00pm is the Coach Bob Hurley Basketball Clinic, followed by the Annual Friendship Game at 6:15pm. All games and the basketball clinic are held at the Bermuda College, and offer free admission.

Over the last 12 years Bermuda has played host to girls and boys AAU basketball teams who came to play in the Bermuda Invitational Basketball Tournament traditionally held the first week after Cup Match.

The Bermuda Invitational has attracted teams along with family and supporters from the East, North East and Mid West Regions of the United States as well as, Westmeath Ireland totaling 852 people. These teams have occupied a total of 1,697 room nights at various hotels across the island over the years.

Prior to the tournament, organizer Allen Walker announced that this year they were able to attract Hall of Famer Coach Bob Hurley who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last year August to conduct a  basketball clinic.
