Business Bermuda Resume Writing Workshop

August 15, 2011

Derek SmithBusiness Bermuda hosted its first workshop on Resume Writing and Interviewing Skills on Thursday, August 11, 2011.

Presented by Mr. Derek Smith, Executive Director of Bermuda Careers Centre at the Department of Labour and Training, the purpose of this workshop was to assist job seekers in making the best first and lasting impression in order to land a job in this challenging economy. Over 30 people attended the 3-hour workshop.

According to Mr. Smith, “In these times it is critically important for job seekers to have their A-game together. They need to have that “Wow factor” to impress employers. Now people need to make a concerted effort to fine-tune their interview skills requiring individuals to think about how they want to present themselves to employers. They need to sell their professional persona to potential employers.”

This workshop discussed different types of resume formats and the value of designing a resume according to the job of interest instead using a basic template. The presentation started with tips on resume structure and content and finished with interview preparation, techniques and closing in order to land the job.

Cheryl Packwood, CEO of Business Bermuda, said, “We understand that there is an unusually high number of unemployed due to our current economic climate and wanted to do something as an organization to help those seeking jobs to understand what employers are looking for in order to increase their chances of being hired.”

“Attendees were given practical steps to not only improve their resumes and stand out in an interview, but how to cope with the job seeking process. Mr. Smith stressed that looking for a job is a full-time job, and job seekers need to be relentless while managing their expectations. He was very well received, and I’m extremely glad that we were able to provide this much-needed information to the community.”
