CandleLight Vigil Held For Troy ‘Yankee’ Rawlins

August 10, 2011

troy yankee rawlins bermudaLast night [Aug.9] a candlelight vigil was held in memory of murder victim Raymond Troy “Yankee” Rawlins – who was fatally shot one year ago.

The vigil was held yards away from where Mr Rawlins was gunned down on August 9, 2010 on Court Street.

Friends and family, old and young, gathered to recall Mr Rawlins on the first anniversary of his death. Attendees lit candles, and community activist Scott Smith started the evening with a prayer.

Brother Ritchie provided music for the evening, which also saw family members of Mr Rawlins call for peace.

The vigil was held in the parking lot area, and police blocked off that particular stretch of Court Street with metal barricades, and uniformed officers stood watch during the vigil.

The 47-year-old father-of-nine was widely known in the community and a frequent figure on Court Street for many years

Mr Rawlins was murdered while standing in the entrance of the Spinning Wheel nightclub on Court Street on 9 August 2011. David Cox was convicted of murdering Mr Rawlins, and must serve a minimum of 38 years in prison before he can be considered for parole.

Before one gets too sentimental – I refer to the following print from the Royal Gazette:

Bermuda’s latest fatal shooting victim, Raymond Troy (Yankee) Rawlins, was described by detectives investigating his murder yesterday as “a well-known figure in the Court Street area”.

That is perhaps to put it mildly. The nickname “Yankee” will be familiar to anyone on the Island who reads the court reports in The Royal Gazette or takes an interest in the Island’s criminal underworld and the colourful characters within it.

The 47-year-old, with his mouthful of gold and looming physical presence, could certainly be described as a distinctive figure. If not quite a household name in Bermuda, the self-confessed former drug dealer and crack addict was certainly notorious to many — including the Police.

This newspaper understands he was viewed as a kingpin in the drugs and gang scene and was a key target for Police..

Thanks to Bernews, the print from the Royal Gazette was graciously edited and abbreviated. Thankfully, we were spared more of his illustrious accomplishments in his crime-ridden career.

Sorry, irritating we know, but we have to, copyright reasons etc, can’t carry other companies writings in full. Not that the RG would sue us or anything, its just not protocol as its effectively taking someone else’s work. Always feel free to take an excerpt from anywhere else and leave the link to their site for more.
