Court Hears Prowling & Intrusion Cases

August 3, 2011

A 35-year-old man pleaded not guilty to intruding on a woman’s privacy in Magistrates Court this morning [Aug.3]. The alleged incident is said to have occurred on July 10, 2011. Paulo Almeida was released on $2,000 bail and told to stay away from the female complainant.

Also appearing in court this morning was 25-year-old Jamel Bascome who pleaded guilty to prowling. The Judge ordered a social inquiry report for Mr Bascome – who has multiple previous convictions – and also gave him a curfew to adhere to.

The court heard the female complainant was sleeping when she heard loud banging on the door of her home in the early hours of the morning of August 3rd.

The defendant continued to bang on the door for an extended time, till the woman eventually called the police. Officers arrived, found Mr Bascome lying down near the front door in an intoxicated state, and promptly arrested him.

Although he pleaded guilty Mr Bascome said he wasn’t prowling and actually went to the house to see his friend: “I just went to check my boy. I wasn’t prowling.”

The Judge also handled cases involving minor cannabis possession and driving while under the influence this morning.

He was not prowling if he knocked on the door. A prowler peeks around quietly. A prowler does not want to be seen or heard.
