Dame Jennifer said, “I first want to take this opportunity to commend the scholarship committee for its hard work in overseeing this important event – and a special thanks to Mrs. Pamela Carlington for her years of focus and dedication to this project.

“Every year the Ministry of Education receives dozens of applications seeking assistance with continued education. And while we would love to be able to assist every applicant, the reality is that we have finite financial resources.

“To those who made the grade, we are delighted that we can provide you with a monetary boost in these tough economic times. Today we are here to recognise the outstanding recipients of the Bermuda Government Scholarships, the Further Education Awards, the Interest-free Student Loans and the Mature Student Awards.

“In total 45 individuals who will be receiving a sponsorship to pursue their educational goals. Each of you here today represents an investment of this Government. We understand that the studies you will undertake over the next few years will serve this Country well when you return home.

“You are an impressive group, you represent are the future leaders of this Country – you are a testament to what can be achieved with hard work, focus and determination.

“To our Bermuda Government Scholars, I know that the significance of this honour is clear to you. To be your country’s scholar, a Bermuda Government Scholar, is something that you should cherish and place on your resumè. That title suggests that you are amongst the best that your country, Bermuda has to offer.

“To all of our recipients I wish you all the best for the upcoming school year. I expect great things from you. Thank you and Congratulations to you all.”

  3. WHY ME says:

Great job everyone. To the government: As a tax payer this is how I prefer to see my money used….to help those who work hard to help themselves. Money well spent, and money spent that will pay dividends and reap rewards.

To the students: Well done!!! Keep at it and don’t give up!

To the parents and teachers: You should be proud!

  4. Well Done says:

Congrats to all students who received awards. All the best in your future studies as Bermuda needs you to move forward.

I have one concern, as a parent with a young child who plans to send my child to public school; it is alarming that most of the scholarship (here and others in the paper) go to students who attend private school. This does not put much faith in our local free educaiton system for me.

I will be thinking and watching.
