Slideshow: Photos of Bermuda in the 1800s

August 3, 2011

The video slideshow below shows images taken by photographer James B. Heyl depicting Bermuda in the 19th century. Featuring photos from the book ‘Bermuda through the camera of James B. Heyl 1868-1897,’ the video was posted online by Arthur L. Ray.

1500 copies were published in 1951, and the book is now a collectors item. A copy of the book is listed online for sale for £800 [$1,310.00]. The seller describes the 60-year-old book as,”A fine copy with just a trace of staining in margin of a couple of pages, in fine original blue cloth. 10 x 12.5in.”

“A very scarce work which is usually found with significant water damage due to poor storage by the publishers. Many of the copies were destroyed, because sales were poor due to high initial retail price.”
