August 6, 2011

After a one-man protest outside the Bermuda Industrial Union’s [BIU] headquarters yesterday [Aug.5] morning, BIU President Chris Furbert held a press conference to provide their perspective.

Mr Furbert called it a very “unfortunate situation” and said the man was hurt while working in a Government job in 2009 and has been off work since then. He said the BIU is “offended that the brother has seen fit to take this course of action,” as the Union has assisted him since he has been off work with his injury.

Mr Furbert’s statement:

  1. wondering says:

get rid of Chris Furbert too! antagonistic loudmouth who has NO ONES but his own interest at heart

  2. poor service says:

Mr. Furbert needs to learn diplomacy! He can’t shoot off his mouth in such a manner and expects to be respected.

  3. Car Battery (Original) says:

The RG REPORTS THAT FURBERT CALLED THIS GUY AN ‘IDIOT’. THIS IS VERY DISRESPECTFUL.

  4. wondering says:

Chris Furbert is one of those old school rough house managers that “gets the job done” i don’t trust him. He acts like someone should bow down to him because he and Brother “xxxxxx” got the man some additional pay.

Poor leadership, poor vocabulary, poor union, typical bullish behaviour from the boss. ever wonder why people are always striking?

  5. True Bermudian says:

    Thanks BIU for ruining tourism.

Ya’ll are useless and do nothing to help Bermuda or Bermudians.

Thanks for f^(%ing it up for the rest of us.

    • James says:

Will you and others stop pushing the lame and to often refuted lie. I’m no fan of the union under Butch and previously Derek, but the BIU have done good work in this little island.

      • Hudson says:

really? Do you remember in the very early 90′s the union picketing in front of the airport forcing the then tourists to walk the length of the causeway in order to catch their flights because taxis, buses etc wouldn’t cross the line? I remember being young then and thinking – this will kill tourism. People will go home and tell everybody they know about their terrible experienc in Bermuda. Bus stikes, garbage strikes, ferry strikes, all at a moments notice, and all designed to make the maximum impact on tourism – once critical to our livelihood. The union has promoted inefficiency and arragance amongst their workers while driving wages through the roof. Oh I don’t think you’re going to convince me the union has done good work in the last 25 years… Perhaps before then, but definately not in recent history.

        • True Bermudian says:

Right on Hudson. You know the deal. Spoken like a real Bermudian with eyes OPEN.

        • smith says:

Nonsense…. I ask that you look at the history of strikes throughout the Caribbean and in other major tourism destinations where real violence ensued and than look at each of those destinations ability to return to as vibrant Tourism markets. It is a myth that the 90′s strikes was the cause for the downturn in tourism. The union didn’t promote inefficiency. What they sought was fair wages for the work provided.Unlike you, I was not a young boy when these strikes took place, I was a senior manager in a major hotel and can tell you first hand that what you believe you know is so far from reality.

  6. Cedar Beams (Original) says:

The union takes money each week from people too stupid to know better, hides its finances contrary to the law, then won’t help a ‘brother’ when he needs it.

Saddest of all, the Government won’t close them down or expose them

…..and still they take money each week from hard working grass roots Bermudians – who are too stupid to know better. Too stupid to realize they are being robbed blind.

  7. star man says:

The BIU in its present form is a money-sucking dinosaur that needs to come clean and show us their books. Then reorganize itself with honest people at the helm. It’s really disgusting how corrupt our beautiful Country has become under the “Labour Party.”

    • True Bermudian says:

Comon Star Man… the issues were there LONG before the PLP got in power.

      They just upped the ante.

      • LOL (original) says:

So to you that makes it right? BIU this guy wants to give you his check take it off his hands…………

        LOL

  8. sandgrownan says:

    The BIU “is offended”…..?? Offended?

Furbert should crawl under a rock.

  9. B, a Lady says:

Isn’t this the very type of the thing the Union terrorizes Employers about? Seems Chris can dish it out, but can’t take it.

    Union dues….$30.000
    A cardboard sign….$5.00
    A week of sick pay….$200,00

A flustered, ranting and raving Union Leader……PRICELESS

BIU members should be asking themselves if they are getting value for their money.

  10. BIU President says:

It’s people like Chris Furburt that give union thugs a bad name.

  11. I’m sure that The President has set a great example for all those Union Brothers and Sisters by taking a pay cut and doing More with Less himself (giggle).

Right on True Bermudian, the Union was hijacked and became the PLP’s walking Stick to beat the UBP Govt with just so that they could win the Govt the result is no Hotels and record levels of Unemployment. Even though some strikes where justified the behaviour of many towards our visitors particularly at the airport/causeway was shameful. Since then visitors have voted with their feet and gone elsewhere.

I’m glad that I no longer give my hard earned money to this bunch of jokers.

  12. Shut Yo Mouth... says:

Keep flogging them Dennis , don’t give up , remember how after THE ONLY TRUE AND HONORABLE LEADER BROTHER OTTIWELL SIMMONS retired ( those that came after couldn’t wait ) The multi million dollar construction fund was ravaged by those friggin vultures . When the older members of the construction division made noise they were told that the money was tied up and loss in the Berkeley fiasco . keep at um Dennis and like a pitbull shake um up .
Now that fund was set up so that the members of the construction division could access it in times just like these when the jobs dried up , but alas , the well has been dipped dry and the membership , those who contributed are now left with a sore and bleeding as you may .

  13. wondering says:

this is where i draw the line…..the union marches on “Capitol Hill” at every little discrepancy………….the same wingers don’t even challenge their bosses to provide financial data that will surely show the well is dry!

    • Derek Simons says:

Oh don’t let us challenge our bosses for anything we get sent home so quick.
I guess it’s because we don’t have the Union. They just talk to us and do as they like with us. Well some!!

      • star man says:

I agree, Derek, without a Union bosses easily can get out of hand. Yes, we need a good Union, just not the dishonest, bullying, money-sucking BIU.

What’s so difficult about forming a another new Union, and managing it honestly? Is that possible in Bermuda nowadays?

  14. Pathetic Lazy People (PLP) says:

    Vote 4 PLP.
    Vote 4 Slavery.
    Vote 4 BIU
    They will screw you.
They tell us we should be
    An independent nation
    Instead it seems we’re headed
    For a modern day plantation

  15. Shamefull says:

This interview and answer and question recording of Chris Furbert is ridiculous. It is shameful that a leader would conduct themselves in such a matter. I would suggest he attend/enroll in a public speaking course to learn how to keep the tone of his voice in a business matter and conduct his body language in a professional matter. I would not want him to represent me in such a current fashion. It does not reflect well on the BIU or PHC which he is the president of also. If this is what the young players of PHC are looking at for an example it is shameful.

  16. Terry says:

I watched the/that video for 50 seconds and gave up after” the brother the brother the brother whilst shuffling papers that he never found and continued on.

    Is Jimmy Hoffa really dead?

  17. Spectators Corner says:

Is it a Furbert thing. so disrespectful to the people they are supposed to represent. He and Lavern need to work in a mail room somewhere where they wont need to talk.
Remember what a union is supposed to be and take a good look at what they are.I withdrew my support for the union way back when Holiday Inn hotel was here because I saw it. Think about it people
    Union dues=$…..
    members How many
Times that and try to find the MONEY and support

    • Rob says:

Otti & Molly, premeditated the Murder of our Hotels in Bermuda, along with the help of a hell of a lot of bad onions.

  18. LaVerne Furbert says:

It is so obvious that few, if any of you, listened to the recording. If you did, you would know that the Union has assisted Mr. Nesbitt. But all you needed was to read something about the BIU/Furbert and you’re on the attack.

One thing is for certain, unlike the majority of you who have posted, Chris Furbert has the courage of his conviction and does not hide behind pen names. You’re all so brave aren’t you.

The BIU has done more to improve the lives of working Bermudians than any other organisation in this country. The PLP comes next.

    • sandgrownan says:

Show us the unqualified audited accounts.

      Can’t or won’t?

    • pebblebeach says:

Ms Furbert, kindly have Chris Furbert the man with the courage of his conviction adhere to the law and disclose the BIU’s financial statements, failing that, please go away.

      • Just saying!! says:

Ditto – Go away and do your job, that you are being paid for. Stay off the radio and bermnews. Honestly lady you are getting paid for a days work that you don’t do.
