32-Yr-Old Woman Fined For Unpaid Bar Bill

September 12, 2011

A 32-year-old woman appeared in Magistrates Court this morning [Sept.12] was fined $200 for deception, after not paying a bar bill.

She also had outstanding traffic fines exceeding $2,000 which Magistrate Warner initially ruled had to be paid today. Shortly after making that decision, he changed his mind and gave the woman, Taurien O’Loughlin, thirty days in which to pay the fine.

The biggest portions of the fine, $1,750, stemmed from fines outstanding and unpaid from convictions in July and August of 2010. Today, the Magistrate dealt with another August 2010 charge and also with the fact that Ms O’Loughlin had not appeared when ordered in August 2010.

The latest charge against Ms O’Loughlin stemmed from a later incident at the Southampton Princess when she was alleged to have consumed four drinks worth $42 for which she had not paid.

The DPP’s evidence was that Ms O’Loughlin had been seen in the company of a gentleman, and that man had paid for all the drinks that he had ordered; but Ms O’Loughlin had not paid for her four drinks.

Ms O’Loughlin’s response was that she had been in the company of a “white man” who said that he would pay for her drinks, but who had then said that he was going to the bathroom and had never returned.

Ms O’Loughlin insisted that this was what had happened and that she was surprised when Hotel Security and Police came up to her and escorted her off the property.

Admitting that she had not paid her earlier fines, totaling $1,750, Ms O’Loughlin explained to the Magistrate that she was currently unemployed, was looking for work, and was working with “Mr Emery” at the NTB in an effort to get a job. She said she would pay the outstanding fines as soon as she was able to get a job.

Having heard her explanations, Senior Magistrate Warner said: “I don’t believe you” and fined her $200 for the offence of deception. He went on: “Normally a person is given time to pay a fine. But that is at my discretion.” The Magistrate then ordered that Ms O’Loughlin must pay her total fine this day or go to jail for 30 days.

Despite what the Magistrate had just said, Ms O’Loughlin immediately asked for “time to pay”. She went on to say that she was trying hard to get a job, would pay off all her fines as soon as she was working, and that she was, that day, going to seek work.

After further exchanges in which the Magistrate sought further assurances from Ms O’Loughlin, the Magistrate relented and gave Ms O’Loughlin until 12 October 2011 to pay her outstanding fines.

  1. oh my says:

so de white man didn’t pay for the drinks after all, funny

  2. oh dear says:

let me say that she obviously has a couple of screws loose or she is a pathological liar… the Mr. Emery she speaks of has been retired from NTB for the last 4 1/2 years. so sad

    • A.S. says:

About Mr. Emery-I was thinking the same thing! Mr. Emery retired from the Bank YEARS ago, so if she’s waiting on him she’s going to be waiting a LONG time. There’s something fishy about this. Someone at the courts should look into this, and if finding out that her story is untrue, she should be brought back before the judge for lying.

      • lmao says:

NTB is not the bank – it’s National Training Board.

      • Real Talk 4 real says:

Maybe just maybe NTB might refer to National Training Board and not the bank just a thought

      • good reader says:

She said Mr Emery of the NTB (National Training board) not BNTB Bank of NT Butterfield)

        • Lissa says:

Mr. Emery does work for the national training board. Secondly, really judge your gonna lock uo a single parent whom is not working in 30 days over a pissy $42 bar bill and a grand in traffic offenses. Taury is a single parent struggling to make ends meet.
Guess she would ave been netter off slapping a kid huh?!

          • Winnie says:

Did I just read that (in my best Steve Urkle voice) so because she chose to have child(ren) and not obey a legal order to pay fine(s) she should be let off. If one is a single parent without a J.O.B. one should more than likely be in a hotel seeking a J.O.B. and saving what little pennies one have.Oh no, here goes the victim mentality, fines were from previous traffic offences not a one off, plus failing to appear, WOW and you talk about really judge. I guess it is ok for her to just do as she pleases……

  8. Back to Life says:

4 weeks to find a job and make $2,200 to pay fines. I hope she has some supporting faamily members and friends to help her out.

  9. Codfish and Potatoes says:

These fines are over a year old, the defendant fails to come to court when ordered and she gets more time to pay? The government must be the dumbest credit business in Bermie!

Clearly, I’ve missed something. Why does where Mr. Emery works have anything to do with the fact that this alleged single parent, is out at Southampton Princess drinking, while being unemployed, begging for someone to buy her alcohol? If she is so concerned about making ends meet, she would have been up South P, applying for a job instead of drinking up their liquor. I’m sorry, my mother was a single parent, and she did EVERYTHING to make sure myself and my siblings had what we needed, so I don’t have sympathy for those who cry pauper but have their feet in the streets all the while. Another thing, where is her child that she is so concerned about providing for? Why are the people who are obviously watching this child, let the mother continue with this unproductive, behaviour. Why wasn’t she taught that when you don’t have money to pay for things, you don’t do it or you don’t go? That’s the whole problem with Bermuda, people condone mediocre behaviour too much, and than when things aren’t going right it’s someone else’s fault. WAKE UP! Just because she’s your friend or you know her doesn’t mean you have to defend her crap. Well I never! Out drinking and running up bills but the judge is in the wrong? Nope, grow up, be a woman and stay home with your child since your broke.

  11. killarblaze says:

$42 for 4 drinks? Been awhile since I’ve been out and now I know why. Two six packs, drink at home and keep the remaining $20 for gas. Or another six pack to share with friends. More drinking for my money if you ask me.

  12. bystander says:

sounds like the judge tried to extort her…..this government is the mob Jr
