Disruption In School Bus Service

September 14, 2011

There has been a disruption of bus service today [Sept.14], with reports that at least two high schools may have been affected.

CedarBridge Academy sent an email notice to parents this afternoon saying, “Good Day Parents, We were advised this afternoon that there would be no school buses sent at the end of the school day.”

“To ensure that we did not have a mass exodus of 750 students leaving the building at the same time, and in the interest of safety, we began dismissing our students at 2:45 p.m. starting with the S1 students.”

“The last group, S4 students were dismissed at 3:15 p.m. Students were advised to leave the building, to walk home, to go to their parents or to the nearest bus route.”

We are awaiting a response from Ministry of Transport as to why the bus service to the school was cancelled, and will update as able.

Update 7:50pm: We have not received a response from the Ministry as of yet.

Update Sept.15: The Ministry of Transport has still not responded to our request for clarification.

  1. Terry says:

    It’s the “OBA’” fault…………………………………

    • Emeka47 says:

excuse me…the OBA??? how abt the PTB and PLP Government, lack of mechanics, parts or not training our own people to do the job. Don’t blame the OBA

      • DUHHH says:

        Clearly it was a joke.

        • Emeka47 says:

oh really! it not funny to me or the OBA

          • 1minute says:

Guess you are new…. Didn’t you know the wrong in Bermuda was caused by the previous government, or that was the official word…. Terry is continuing that trend, in jest…

          • star man says:

“it not funny to me or the OBA” You had better lighten up, then. And I’m sure the OBA could care less. These are the jokes!

  2. Talk2mestr8 says:

This is crazy!! They hire 20 new drivers and still issues!! Don’t know about other routes but #4 has been irregular for the past 3 weeks! When I asked an inspector at the terminal all I get is a shoulder shrug….! PTB don’t get mad when students cause trouble at the terminal!! Get your stuff together!!

  3. Wondering says:

    And the reason for this?????

  4. Waiting for 5pm says:

They most likely don’t have buses because there are about 60 buses broken down waiting for repairs and the other buses are busy driving around the tourist.

    • Emeka47 says:

Leave the tourist out of this!! They are the ones putting bread and butter on YOUR table!!

      • Street talk says:

Tourism money doesnt go in my pocket. Only the few restaurants and hotels get their money and the guest workers working within those businesses..

        • star man says:

“Tourism money doesnt go in my pocket.” Yes it does, indirectly. Say you are a plumber, and I work for a hotel. I need a plumber so I call you. The $150 you charge me for your services, which goes into your pocket, comes from me, the money from me came from the hotel who pays my salary. The hotel, of course, gets it’s money from the tourist who pays to stay there. So the tourist put $150 into your pocket.

        • Got to go says:

You better learn some basic economics poppa!

  5. ella says:

As of 4:41 today, i have not received any notice from Cedarbridge. RIDICULOUS!! I would not have known this important piece of information if it was not for Bernews. Thank you Bernews!

  6. Down 'n' Dirty says:

Perfect day for a long walk ..

    • Grubster says:

yeah in the wind and rain. What’s going on?

      • somebody's momma says:

Rain finished just in time for last group. Wind will help push them along

  7. Umm umm says:

60+ buses are out of service, but they still had sightseeing buses for Duckyard!!!! That’s sum bullish%#!!!!!!

    • Emeka47 says:

Go to school the word is DOCKYARD… been that name for more than 200 years!

  8. The Messenger says:

750 students dismissed within 30 minutes of each other. I hope everything went smoothly.
Shame on DPT, get them buses fixed and on the road. I have noticed a lot more 2K4 year and under models(Berkohf), on the road a lot. I have even seen 1996 yr models on the road (I’m surprised the drivers haven’t held a Union meeting because they have to manually wind the destination display). Also, quite a few buses are dirty with black soot on their rears (remember the buses of the 70′s and 80′s?) and heavily scratched. Clearly budget cuts have affected them as well but I’m sure with some effort DPT can keep more buses on the road or at least wash them.

  9. THE HELL! says:

Buses are not available because of the dam budget cuts plus some mechanics are on vacation no one is repairing the dam buses Drivers have to hang around in the lunch room because they have no bus to drive. Just another screw up from this incompetent government and their budget cuts..they are ruining this country..SMH!!

  10. Rick Rock says:

More evidence that the government is out of money. Leaving school kids stranded with an hour’s notice. Ridiculous. And they want to take full control of providing healthcare. Scary prospect.

  11. bystander says:

bernews loves to hear your stupid responses…..why? they and Lavern Sherbert listen intently to you and all your public knowledge and capitalize on it by statistics. wake up Bermuda, your being used at every corner of your block.

  12. soon leavin' says:

I’ll bet the thousands of dollars the “cog” just spent travelling, somewhere ,for something… would help pay for repairs to the buses.
Check out how much of your money government officilas have spent on travel the past 3 months…it will blow your mind!

    • star man says:

The people suffer! But self-serving Gov’t eletes will not suffer! No! And they will not take a piddly 15% pay cut – while you and me get laid off, or our hours are cut. The buses are not running like they should. 1400 homes have no electricity! Can you believe that? In rich Bermuda? Who knows how many mortgages have been pulled in?

People are not stupid, they see what the PLP elites are doing to them. Nothing’s changed.

Read the on-line comments. You’ll notice the PLP have little support from thinking Bermudians. It’s time to give the new OBA a chance. Cuz nothing could be worse than what we have now.

      • Got to go says:

The problem is that there are not enough thinking Bermudians.

  13. shakaZulu says:

What is all the fuss about? The students bypass the bus and walk every day. You can sometimes see them walking 6 deep and 4 wide. So why not save money and pull the buses off the route? I wish that we take time to look at both sides of the coin.
BTW.. Who is so silly as to take Terry seriously? Lighten up, we need a Clown.

    • Riley B King says:

With comments like this it’s obvious who the clown is.

    • question says:

You see a lot of students walking in the afternoon because the bus to town was cut early last school year and the majority of them were given no option but to walk if they are going into and many have said how the buses on Middle Road just drive past them….now the issue at hand is that there are no morning buses direct to the school – so now everyone will complain that the students aren’t going to school or that they are causing issues at the terminal because they will have to go through there to catch the Prospect bus from town

    • KARMA says:

Thank you. They don’t want to catch the bus, and the MAJORITY of the ones that do are so damn rude to the drivers its pathetic. They jump in and out of the bus windows, spit at the drivers, and are all out rude and disrespectful. Maybe this should have been on the agenda for striking and most definately needs to be addressed with CedarBridge. Instead of parents bitching and complaining about the lack of buses, you need to grab your rude a*s child(ren) by their necks and make sure that they learn respect. If not f#%k um n let them walk. And YES my child did attend CB and had to walk town last year, and if they were part of the problem (unbeknown to me cause I would knock their teeth out) then GOOD – Let them walk in the wind, rain and hail too!

      • Riley B King says:

Are these comments moderated? I’m pretty broad minded but if you’re going to let this kind of language on, I’ll get my news from somewhere else.

  14. dill says:

The School Children from Whitney school have been late everyday cause the buses have not been comming on route 3 middle road devonshire and i think this is bad cause my son wants to catch the bus and be more indenpendent gov needs to get it right and get the workers and children to school and home let the taxi driver deal with the tourist.

  15. 1minute says:

Not only school buses, there were delays at the bus terminal as well…

  16. Fairy says:

It is a real shame that a country’s own youth are not top priority.

  17. Wow says:

I can see it now, the Cabinet meeting surrounding this issue:

Terry – “Jennifer when you gonna deal with this here”

Jennifer – “Terry transport is your Ministry get on with it Bie”

Uncle Derrick – “You lot annoy the Unions again? Jennifer stop drinking all that champagne and get Kelmar to call my mate Chris about all of this here see”

Premier – looking out the window

  18. stop the BS says:

Got to make Terry look bad he might make another leadership run!

  19. Student says:

    Aunt Jennifer,

Can you please help with this, my momma lost her job at the hotel and cannot afford to fix her bike so i use the bus to get to CBA

    Student
