‘Don’t Be Fuelish’ Says Dept. of Energy

September 22, 2011

To promote today’s [Sept.22] Car Free Day, the Director of the Department of Energy Jeane Nikolai and Energy Consultant at the Department of Energy Allan Bean [foreground] stood on East Broadway last night, with a sign urging motorists to walk, ride a pedal bike or car pool to work in support of the Moving Planet global campaign, aimed at cutting down the use of fossil fuels.

The Bermuda Environmental and Sustainability Taskforce [BEST] said, “Every September 22, people from around the world get together in the streets, intersections, and neighbourhood blocks to remind the world that we don’t have to accept our car-dominated society.”

“But we do not want just one day of celebration and then a return to “normal” life. When people get out of their cars, they should stay out of their cars. It is up to us, it is up to our cities, and our governments to help create permanent change to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, and other people who do not drive cars.”

“Let World Carfree Day be a showcase for just how our cities might look like, feel like, and sound like without cars…365 days a year.”

    • Black Soil says:

Will the Director of the Department of Energy Jeane Nikolai and the Energy Consultant at the Department of Energy Allan Bean be using gas tomorrow? This is what our tax dollars are going too?? This govt is out-of-touch!! These guys would be better off talking to our youth.

  2. Leisure says:

    Fail.

    • Black Soil says:

Yup….hey Bermuda..if you want less gas used in Bermuda why don’t you ask our out-of-touch PLP politician to dish their waste-of-space ministerial cars?? Am I freakin out of my mind for asking for a little bit of Leadership!!!! Can I get some brothers to set an example!!??!!

  3. Fed Up Bermudian says:

Either of you guys ever hear of carpooling? Walking? Riding a bike (motor or pedal)? It’s not much but it’s a start. It’s people like you that drag us all down. Are you saying that the only other way to get around is the buses? Don’t you have any friends? Ah, sorry- with attitudes like those, who would you carpool with, silly me.

Don’t demean the efforts of people at least trying to make a difference. What was it that you did in order to make Bermuda better? Oh right- you fought the good fight with sarcasm and smarta$$ed comments, I see how that can be very affective.

    Talk about FAIL.

    • joonya says:

Yeah guys c’mon. There are other options. For instatnce, I caught a ride this morning with a mate who drives a diesel fume spewing heavy truck.

      • Black Soil says:

Car pooling does not work. Ever seen the car pool lanes in California. They are empty, like the brain boxes we have running this declining country.

        • californian on the rock says:

black soil do you live in CA? I’m sorry but I am from there and these lanes are highly used. please don’t spew false facts.

          thanks

  4. KARMA says:

Hmmmm considering the fact that you need a car seat in the back for each child you have to give a ride to, can’t sit in laps anymore, blah blah blah it is way more effective to get ridiculous traffic tickets in the effort to carpool huh……
    Yes lets carpool.

  5. Justin says:

He wasn’t there when I cycled along East broadway at 06:30 this morning ;)

  6. Is it just me? says:

Is it me or does the encouragement of “Rubber Necking” to read advertising or signs along any road inherently dangerous? I was driving along minding my own business yesterday on my bike and was nearly run into by several cars / bikes that were spending there time reading the signs…

  7. drunkenUrsula says:

All I need is a car to take me to the liqour store to buy my rum….

  8. Chris Worboys says:

    Nice work Allan!

  9. Bermudian says:

They need to go and take alook at the amount of cars that go to saltus schooland ask them to car pool.

  10. gone fishin' says:

I carpooled with a co-worker this morning. We usually both drive to work alone and feel guilty about it.

at least Car Free Day has got us talking about the issue – 15 comments so far plus mine…..

  11. sam montain says:

wat a joke u let in bigger cars and u fools talk of consevation

  12. My two cents says:

If they keep raising parking fees in Hamilton, I guarantee more people will start carpooling. It is amazing how many cars have one person in them. It seems crazy, but to each his own. I will keep driving my bike until they bring in electric cars.

  13. me says:

DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY SHOULD TALK TO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT ABOUT THE COST OF THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION!
