PLP: Simmons, Dame Jennifer To Run

September 30, 2011

[Updated] Constituency #31 Southampton West Central held their candidate selection meeting last night [Sept.29], and Scott Simmons was selected over Denton Williams to represent the branch.

In the 2007 General Election, the UBP’s Jon Brunson won the Southampton West Central seat with 57% of the vote against the PLP’s Marc Bean. Due to Mr Brunson’s resignation, a by-election was held in 2008, with the UBP’s Charlie Swan winning over PLP candidate Marc Bean. Mr Swan – one of the last two UBP MPs – has not declared yet if he will seek re-election.

Also last night, Constituency #2 St George’s West were deciding whether John Gibbons will be their candidate, while Constituency #1 St. George’s North confirmed Dame Jennifer Smith will stand for the branch.

In 2007 the UBP’s Kim Swan beat the PLP’s Dean Foggo by 17 votes [457-440] in St George’s West [C#2], with the constituency having a voter turnout of 77%. Mr Swan still holds the seat, one of the last two MPs under the UBP banner. The next election may see a three-way race for the seat, as Kim Swan has confirmed he plans to run in St George’s West again. That same year, Dame Jennifer beat the UBP’s Kenneth Bascome 474 – 449 in St George’s North [C#1].

The winners of the PLP candidate selection meetings thus far are; Diallo Rabain in Hamilton South [C#7], Rolfe Commissiong in Pembroke South East [C#21], Zane DeSilva in Southampton East [C#29], Randy Horton in Southampton West [C#32], Kim Wilson in Sandys South Central [C#34], Dennis Lister in Sandys North Central [C#35], Walton Brown in Pembroke [#33] and Wayne Furbert in Hamilton West [#C6].

There will be a second candidate selection meeting for Constituency #18 Pembroke West Central on October 12, after the first candidate selection meeting for Pembroke West Central [between incumbent Minister Neletha Butterfield and Senator David Burt] ended in controversy last week.

  2. This is amazing to me – - each day, I come to Bernews and read how the PLP continues to make these selections – - how could Scott Simmons be chosen to stand as a candidate in the next general election? I just don’t understand it. This man has proven to have a complete disregard for the laws of this country, as well as a level of entitlement which is unwarranted.

Hear me, PLP Leadership – - this is not the way to persuade the young Black voters to “look” at your party as a viable option in the election – - giving us any “supposed” young Black face isn’t going to cut it – - giving us determinded, intelligent, committed, young Black faces like Rabain, Burt WILL make us pay attention.

It’s simply not an easy win for you this time – - you need to recognize that and prepare . . .

I am not a PLP fan but John Gibbons is an excellant choice. Young, vibrant, honest and committed. I wish him luck.

I have always thought it, but you have just proven to me just how ignorant you really are…..
Just ask St Georges people about the “real” Mr. Gibbons…..
