Minister Meets Space Industry Executives

September 15, 2011

Minister of Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy Walter Roban met this week in Paris with space industry executives.

In meetings with international network operators [including SES, Iridium, International Launch Services], industry associations and members of the financial community who invest in the space sector, Minister Roban outlined a concept for “making Bermuda a one-stop-shop for landing and managing satellite traffic, re-insuring launches, and providing a base for tax-efficient operations.”

Minister Roban is pictured below with the President of the Satellite Industry Association Patricia Cooper:

“The reactions to what we can offer this industry are very positive,” Minister Roban said in a statement at the end of the three-day round of meetings. “We now have the task of making what we know this market needs into an offering they will take up. I will be moving this as quickly as possible.”

“I am determined to build on the comparative advantage we have built for ourselves over the years,” the Minister concluded. “We have the know-how, the enterprise culture, the infrastructure, the regulatory framework, and the orbital real-estate. It’s not hard to see why we should pursue this.”

The Bermuda delegation’s presence at the annual event was preceded by a one-day round of meetings in London at which they briefed the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on the space project and enlisted them in the effort to direct UK space business to the island.

In addition, Minister Roban met with senior members of the UK telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, in an effort to forge a relationship that will enable Bermuda to act quickly in matters of international regulation where Ofcom’s participation is required.

The Minister and Dr. Binns return to the island on Friday, and will brief Cabinet colleagues regarding the World Satellite Business Conference over the coming week.

A statement issued by Government said that “It is expected that the Minister’s Paris meetings will result in a consolidated proposition to the space industry that will be used over the coming months to attract additional jobs and investment to the island.”

A UBP idea made possible by the vision of the late Dr. John Stubbs. I hope we can finally take advantage of the GREAT idea he created for Bermuda many, many years ago^^

  5. specialgirl4 says:

Great Minister Roban, keep looking upward and pushing forward for Bermuda.

    • Lorrin says:

Please consider the environment with any of these ventures…..Experiments in the atmosphere, stratosphere and lithosphere are potentially causing rapid deaths of birds. Also, what has happened with all the renewable energy and sustainability initiatives??? Seems the ball has been dropped on this one. We are building on every single sq inch of this small island—if the sea level doesnt rise, Im sure we are sinking with all the added concrete being poured!:)

    • sandgrownan says:

Everyone else sends rocket scientists, Bermuda sends a space cadet.
