10,000 Customers Power Affected

October 8, 2011

Light-bulb-broken electricity genericApproximately 10,000 customers were affected this afternoon [Oct.8] after engines in BELCO’s East Power Station tripped. Workers quickly moved to stabilize the system and restored power to the majority of customers.

A BELCO spokesperson said, “At 1:10 pm, two engines in BELCO’s East Power Station tripped, causing the system to shed load automatically from circuits out of BELCO’s Belmont Substation; power to those circuits was restored after approximately 12 minutes.

“At 1:37 pm, the loss of generation in the East Power Station led operators to shed load manually to stabilize the system. Load was shed on circuits out of BELCO’s Fractious Street, Somerset, Naval Annex and Harrington Substations. ”

“Power was restored to those circuits at approximately 2:29 pm. An additional, automatic system load shed occurred at 2:48 pm, affecting a circuit out of BELCO’s Prospect Substation. [Restoration expected shortly]”

“In all, approximately 10,000 customers were affected. System operators continue working to stabilize the system. The cause is under investigation.”

  1. Harmony says:

Thank you to Belco for their prompt action to resolve the problem!!!!

    • PEPPER says:

Harmony… you say thanks for the promt action….I am wondering why the hell this happened…

      • young engineer says:

do you know anything about power generation? if not then to answer your question would take some time.

        • Sean says:

Try to explain to us laymans then please, cause I have the same question. Why did the power go out on a relatively calm Saturday, where demand was not high, due to the cooler, dryer weather. I”m not an engineer, but I am in IT. Bermuda’s infrastructre is starting to annoy me, whereas if it’s not the internet going down, its the power…..so yea, I’d like an explanation.

      • powerman says:

        Relax Pepper.
Has your car, washing machine or zuba stick ever broken down?

  2. Family Man says:

Must be all that cheap fuel they’re using, causing the engines to sputter and fail!

  3. Engines gotta stop drinking on Friday night so they don’t trip on Saturday morning

  4. confused says:

Really??? The price of fuel (surcharge) doubles and now we have substation/engine issues????? Seems a bit messed to me, twice the price for half the service??? Making cablevision (a joke) look good.

  5. STEWEY BABCOCK says:

Ran a little short of vasaline did you ?

  6. 1minute says:

Thank-you for calling BELCO. All lines are busy, please call back later.

  7. Terry says:

This power outage was caused by a disruption in the Smiths Parish area. A spokesperson for the ‘Belcocarius Thomas family said that…”Pizza is on it’s way”. Yet to be confirmed by the ‘Save the Long Bay Club’. Updates will be available as soon as Thomas and friends can get the weed off the beech……stay tuned……………………

  8. The solution is obvious says:

    Increase the fuel surcharge.

After all, now that it’s cool enough that people aren’t running airconditioners full time, BELCO has to raise revenues somehow. I’m sure this will provide them with just the excuse they need to download the cost of these repairs and/or equipment upgrades on the consumer.
